Job Description

About the Role

You'll help manage safety, industrial hygiene, and environmental issues for The New York Times (NYT), reporting directly to the Executive Director of Occupational Health and Safety. Specifically, managing accident prevention activities and programs, environmental (i.e., indoor air quality) testing and environmental reporting to government agencies, including representing NYT on safety and environmental compliance issues with government agencies across our offices and production locations. You will also assist the Executive Director in managing all occupational health risk management programs.

Responsibilities:
  • To manage and assist department managers in developing accident prevention activities and programs.
  • To train employees on regulatory subjects such as hazard communications, lockout/tag-out, respiratory protection, and general safety and accident prevention subjects.
  • To ensure proper reporting to governmental agencies on environmental issues including right-to-know, emissions, hazardous waste disposal, operating permits for equipment and storage tanks.
  • To conduct audits of NYT operations to ensure continued compliance with safety, industrial hygiene and environmental regulations as well as NYT programs and policies on these issues.
  • To coordinate indoor air quality testing in response to employee concerns and to document continued compliance with standards and guidelines.
  • Act decisively when responding to emergency situations
  • You will work independently and as a team member to develop and implement programs with OHD staff and NYT departments
  • Organize and lead effective meetings
  • Assist in managing NYT's response to COVID-19
  • Demonstrates support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.


Basic Qualifications:
  • Approximately 5+ years of technical experience in the fields of Occupational Health and Safety
  • Deep knowledge of regulatory requirements in OSHA, NYDEP, EPA and Workers' Compensation
  • Approximately 5+ years experience in General Management in a Team Environment


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Certification in safety (Certified Safety Professional) and a degree in safety
  • Highly service oriented with good interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, including the ability to develop concise documentation, presentations and trainings.
  • Managing in a union environment


The annual base pay salary for this role is between $135,000.00 and $145,000.00.
