TAX DIRECTOR

Reports to: Chief Financial Officer
Status: Regular, Full-time, Exempt
Location: Anchorage, AK

JOB SUMMARY: The Tax Director will create and lead the Corporate Tax strategy and will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of tax accounting and compliance within The Aleut Corporation (Aleut) and subsidiaries. They will play a critical role in ensuring accurate and timely tax reporting, minimizing tax risks, and optimizing tax strategies. The Tax Director will determine taxes owed according to prescribed rates, laws, and regulations. Advise management regarding effects of business activities on taxes and strategies for minimizing tax liability. Confirm that Aleut and its subsidiaries comply with periodic tax payment, information reporting, and other taxing authority requirements.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee the Corporate Tax function at both the parent and subsidiaries utilizing internal and external resources
  • Develop and lead the strategic vision for tax compliance and tax planning of current and future business endeavors, including, but not limited to, Settlement Trusts, Mergers & Acquisitions, and other investments or dispositions.
  • Direct all aspects of tax accounting and compliance, including preparing and reviewing tax returns, tax provisions, and tax-related financial statements including, but not limited to: Federal & State Income Taxes, Gross Receipts Tax, Sales Tax, Property & Use Tax, and Local Taxes & Fees.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally and collaboratively on projects representing Finance and Accounting from a Tax perspective.
  • Prepare Business License returns, annual reports, property tax and other miscellaneous returns.
  • Lead and support all tax related audits
  • Respond to notices from tax authorities on sales and use and property tax matters.
  • Remain current of any regulatory changes on Federal, state, and local levels and assess their potential impact on Aleut.
  • Establish and build relationships with taxing agents.
  • Lead, direct, and oversee the production of the GAAP tax provision and corresponding disclosures by utilizing both internal and external resources.
  • Guide or prepare reconciliations on tax-related accounts as necessary
  • Provide variance analysis related to tax-related accounts on the P&L.
  • Create and maintain a tax compliance calendar for each respective tax.
  • Assist with the maintenance of a database of executed resale and exemption certificates.
  • Maintain and organize files and tax records.
  • Perform work under minimum supervision that is varied and that may be somewhat difficult in character, but usually involves limited responsibility.
  • Direct special projects and perform other additional duties upon request.

  • Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements, and projections.
  • Ability to protect and keep sensitive and proprietary information confidential.
  • Must be proficient in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field; OR equivalent combination of experience, education and/or training.
  2. Seven (7) years of experience in tax compliance matters including sales and non-income tax, property tax, along with preparation of business licenses for a national publicly traded retail company, including E-Commerce.
