Position Title: Agriculture Teacher
Location: Southampton County Public Schools
Reports To: Principal
Job Summary: The Agriculture Teacher is responsible for providing instruction in agricultural sciences, including plant and animal science, horticulture, and agricultural mechanics. The role involves developing and delivering engaging curriculum, fostering student interest in agriculture, and preparing students for careers in the agricultural industry. The Agriculture Teacher will also oversee student projects and participate in school and community agricultural programs.
Key Responsibilities:
  1. Instructional Planning and Delivery:
    • Develop and implement a comprehensive agricultural curriculum that aligns with state and national standards.
    • Provide instruction in various areas of agriculture, including crop production, animal husbandry, soil science, and agricultural technology.
    • Utilize a range of teaching methods, including lectures, demonstrations, hands-on activities, and field trips to enhance learning.
  2. Student Engagement and Assessment:
    • Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages student participation and learning.
    • Assess and evaluate student progress through assignments, projects, tests, and other assessments.
    • Provide timely feedback to students and support their academic growth and development.
  3. Laboratory and Project Management:
    • Oversee and manage the use of agricultural laboratories, equipment, and facilities.
    • Supervise student agricultural projects, including plant and animal care, and ensure safety and compliance with regulations.
    • Coordinate and manage the school's greenhouse, farm, or other agricultural facilities as applicable.
  4. Curriculum Development and Professional Development:
    • Develop and update instructional materials and resources to enhance the agricultural curriculum.
    • Stay current with advancements in agricultural science and technology through professional development opportunities.
    • Incorporate new trends and best practices into the classroom to ensure students receive relevant and up-to-date education.
  5. Community and Industry Engagement:
    • Build and maintain partnerships with local agricultural businesses, organizations, and community stakeholders.
    • Organize and participate in agricultural fairs, competitions, and other community events to promote agricultural education.
    • Facilitate guest speakers, field trips, and other learning opportunities that connect students with the agricultural industry.
  6. Advisory and Extracurricular Activities:
    • Serve as an advisor for student organizations, such as Future Farmers of America (FFA), and oversee related activities and events.
    • Support and guide students in developing leadership skills and pursuing agricultural careers.
    • Participate in school committees, meetings, and other extracurricular activities as required.
  7. Administrative Tasks:
    • Maintain accurate records of student grades, attendance, and other relevant documentation.
    • Prepare and submit reports, plans, and other required paperwork in a timely manner.
    • Manage classroom supplies and resources, and ensure proper maintenance and inventory.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Education, Agriculture, or a related field.
  • Valid state teaching certification in Agricultural Education.
  • Previous experience teaching agriculture or related subjects preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of agricultural science, technology, and industry practices.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, colleagues, and community partners.
  • Proficiency in using agricultural equipment and technology.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move around for extended periods.
  • Capacity to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to perform tasks involving manual labor and outdoor work.
  • Ability to work in various environmental conditions, including laboratory and field settings.
Work Environment:
  • Work is performed in a classroom, laboratory, and outdoor agricultural settings.
  • Exposure to various weather conditions and agricultural materials.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for school events and community activities.
