' - Department:' Endo - Schedule:' Full Time, Days.' 40 hrs. - Hospital:' Ascension Providence Rochester - Location:' Rochester, Michigan The Endoscopy Technician functions as part of the Endoscopy Team under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and/or a Physician and collaborates with all members of the Endoscopy Team. Adheres to accepted standards and follows department policies and procedures while preparing for and assisting with endoscopic procedures. - Essential Functions - Apply the principles of asepsis in a competent manner to provide optimum patient care. - Participate in general cleaning, stocking, disinfection/sterilization of equipment, instruments and supplies according to policy and procedure; maintains a clean, organized and safe environment in Endoscopy. - Assist in setting up the Endoscopy Unit with supplies and equipment. Differentiate methods of scope disinfection, special endoscopes and procedures. - Anticipate and prepare for the needs of the physician and Endoscopy Team. - Assist with pre-procedure care of the patient. - Assist the physician in performing endoscopy procedures. - Perform patient care duties as directed by the Registered Nurse/Physician as follows: a. Properly identifies the patient using two qualifiers (i.e. ID bracelet name and birthday) b. Prepares, checks and monitors the function of endoscopy equipment c. Takes and records vital signs; reports abnormal values to physician and/or RN d. Clean and dress wounds as directed e. Discontinue intravenous infusions f. May inject dye through cannulas, under the direct supervision of the Physician or RN g. Apply oxygen per mask or nasal cannula h. Identify medications and read medication labels appropriate to the situation i. Respond to Code Blue page and other emergency situations within the unit j. Apply monitoring equipment - Assist physician with obtaining specimens. a. Initiate requisitions; order lab work via the computer b. Understands and is able to articulate name and location of specimen c. Deliver specimens to the laboratory in a safe, expedient manner. - Document the following: a. Disposition of patient's valuables b. Time patient enters procedure room c. Equipment/supplies used d. Vital signs e. Source and name of specimens and time to lab| Performs a variety of technical functions including the following: a. Order and stock supplies and special equipment b. Check labels for expiration dates on supplies c. Orders supplies and equipment repairs as needed d. Preparation of sterile trays and fields e. Routine cleaning assignments, including decontamination of endoscopic equipment. Infection control principles and practices are essential and mandatory f. Biological testing, chemical activation testing and documentation g. Assists with scheduling of patients h. Assists with charge documentation i. Assists with orientation of personnel - Non-Essential Functions - Perform all duties in a manner consistent with safe patient care and according to policy and procedures. Respect patient's rights to privacy, dignity and safety. - Must be able to wear any Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required for complying with Standard Precautions (OSHA). - Contribute to unit projects and assists in trial and evaluations of new equipment/supplies and procedures. - Promote a positive work environment as evidenced by quality service and positive staff attitudes. - Demonstrates and actively promotes an understanding and commitment to the mission of Ascension through performing behaviors consistent with the Ascension Standards of Performance and Code of Ethics. - This position shall have access to and disclose personal health information only when reasonably necessary to perform the designated job related responsibilities. This will include taking into account their religious and cultural needs and preferences. Licensure / Certification / Registration: - BLS Certification within six (6) months required. Education: - High school diploma or G.E.D required. Work Experience: - A level of knowledge of sterilization, decontamination, patient care, supply and equipment utilization normally acquired through one of the following is required: - Certification in sterile processing - Successful completion of a Surgical Technologist Program - Military service trained as a Surgical Technologist - LPN trained as a Surgical Technologist - Equivalent work experience as a Surgical Technologist or Endoscopy Technologist. - Previous experience in endoscopic procedures preferred.
