GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs both routine and skilled work in the construction, maintenance and repair of District-owned public works infrastructure and facilities; operates a variety of vehicles and hand and power tools; assists journey-level craft and trade personnel; and performs related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Maintenance Worker I is the entry-level class in this series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of the District's public works infrastructure and Port facilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required of personnel so classified.
1. Performs a variety of routine-to-skilled duties in construction, maintenance and repair of the District's public works infrastructure and facilities, including streets,
curbs, gutters, sidewalks, parks, parking lots, fences and railroad tracks and sidings.
2. Performs a variety of routine-to-skilled duties in the construction, maintenance and repair to harbor facilities, including commercial and cruise ship terminals, docks, boat slips, piers, launch ramps, moorings and navigational aids.
3. Assists and works with journey-level craft and trade personnel, including Electricians, HVAC Technicians, Carpenters, Painters, Maintenance Mechanics, Plumbers, Locksmiths, Fleet Maintenance Technicians and Marine Mechanics.
4. Performs routine-to-skilled duties in the construction, maintenance and repair of concrete facilities, such as sidewalks, driveways, monuments, curbs and gutters; mixes, sets forms, trowels and finishes concrete.
5. Repairs asphalt streets, driveways, parking lots and paths.
6. Operates a variety of light and medium-duty motorized maintenance and construction equipment, including forklifts, trucks, tractors, packers, reach lift, and other District equipment that does not require a Class A driver license.
7. Moves and relocates office furniture.
8. Operates a variety of hand and power tools.
9. Participates in the District's safety program; follows safety practices in work methods and procedures; ensures proper safety procedures while working in dangerous situations; educates assigned personnel on rules, regulations, codes, safe work habits and potential hazards presented by their work environment.
10. Operates a workboat on an assigned basis to perform harbor and shoreline debris removal and maintenance duties.
11. May perform deckhand duties on the District's maintenance and repair workboat.
12. May be assigned to pick up and remove litter and debris from parking lots, parks, marine terminals and other District facilities.
13. Performs rigging, slinging and hoisting for lifting operations.
14. Assists and works with journey-level Equipment Operators in rigging, slinging and hoists on lifting operations.
15. May be assigned custodial and landscape type duties on District properties.
16. Handling and loading of materials e.g. soil, mulch, sand, rocket, etc.
OTHER DUTIES
1. If qualified, may perform underwater diving duties involved in the inspection, installation, maintenance and repair of marine facilities, such as piers, moorings, harbor buoys, docks, boat slips and harbor navigational aids.
2. May perform occasional metal cutting duties and assists journey-level personnel in performing metal fabrication.
3. May be assigned to assist in the demolition of water vessels.
Qualifications
Knowledge of:
1. Methods, practices, tools and equipment common to the construction, maintenance and repair of a public works infrastructure or a large commercial marine facility.
2. Practices, tools and equipment common to the building and construction trades, including carpenter, painter, electrician, plumber, welder and concrete finisher.
3. Safety practices pertaining to the work.
4. Proper placement of cones, barricades and warning devices and directing traffic flow at work sites.
5. Computer applications applicable to assigned work responsibilities.
Ability to:
1. Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools and equipment common to the public works maintenance and construction trades.
2. Basic methods, practices and tools common to various construction trades, including carpenter, electrician, plumber, concrete finisher and painter.
3. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
4. Perform heavy physical labor to include lifting objects weighing up to ninety pounds.
5. Exercise independent judgment and initiative within established guidelines and without close supervision.
6. Coordinate work assignments with other sections, departments, divisions or agencies.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education, Training and Experience:
Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent; and one year of experience in the use of hand and power tools, equipment and machinery associated with the construction, mechanical, electrical or building trades. Time served as a District Intern counts towards the years of experience.
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
A current, valid California Class C driver's license at time of appointment and maintained at all times thereafter in order to operate a vehicle on District business.
A current, valid California Class B driver's license must be obtained by the completion of the probationary period and maintained at all times thereafter in order to operate a vehicle on District business.
A valid first aid and CPR certification may be required and, if required, must be maintained throughout District employment.
The District reserves the right to change or add to any of the stated licensing requirements at any time, as required by law, regulation or business necessity.
If assigned to perform work at any of the District's maritime facilities, you must be able to pass a background check in accordance with current Federal and State requirements.
Employees may be required to: serve on an on-call or stand-by basis; work on assigned shifts, on weekends and work overtime.

Depending upon the number of applicants meeting the minimum qualifications, applicants may be scheduled for one or more of the assessments listed below. Passing score is 70% out of 100% on each assessment section.
THE INITIAL ASSESSMENT (40%) IS SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY, DECEMBER 3, 2024. THE APPRAISAL PANEL (60%) IS TENTATIVELY SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2024.
