Job Description

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, facility management, civil engineering, architecture or related field required and seven (7) years of related experience, including five (5) years in healthcare OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and professional experience.
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Construction Manager (CCM), Project Management Professional (PMP), or similar are highly favorable.
  • Five (5) years of demonstrated coordination and leadership of teams preferred.
  • Must possess the ability to effectively communicate ideas, provide direction, and inspire collaboration.


Levels of Contact:

Daily contact with all levels of Silver Cross Hospital and its Affiliates including staff, contractors, vendors, architects, etc. Frequent contact with City, County, Township, State, Federal and other regulatory agencies, including JCAHO, IDPH, OSHA, EPA.


Summary: Plan and inspect construction and remodeling projects for Silver Cross Hospital. Obtain bids and negotiate contracts. Ensure all projects conform to plan specifications and codes, are completed in a timely manner, and meet the level of quality desired. Coordinate and supervise construction crews comprised of Hospital staff and private construction employees. Plan and develop specifications for future improvements and provide professional evaluation to all departments within the facility. Monitor and enforce Interim Life Safety Measures during projects. Maintain all building and construction prints in an organized manner.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

Design (External)

Provide management of the design & pre-construction process from inception to the start of construction.


Lead the programming efforts and schematic design to plan new or renovated spaces or facilities.

Obtain approval of programming decisions and schematic design.


Lead and develop new design/prototype standards. Provide direction to designers, architects, & other consultants in defining appropriate scope of work through a consultative process with Silver Cross staff, at all times bearing the approved budget in mind.


Monitor work of contracted design team in meeting standards and achieving the goals approved during programming.


Manage the architect, engineer, interior designer, and regulatory authorities to ensure general compliance with life safety standards and codes, as well as government reporting requirements.

Oversee financial, administrative, construction management, change-order management, quality assurance control for all design elements.


Design (Internal)

Design and pre-construction process from inception through construction.

Develop the project program and schematic design for new and renovated spaces and facilities.

Actively participates in selecting project architects, engineers, other professional consultants, and assumes the leading role in developing and refining the RFQ/RFP documents and selecting the construction managers and construction related consultants and equipment providers.

Develop project plans, schedules, and budgets for all designated projects, including resource requirements and recommendations. Analyze process flows for operational processes relating to designated projects. Recommend changes resulting in cost savings and enhanced customer service.


Organize teams of professionals and project support staff towards successful completion of designated projects. Provide leadership facilitating timely decision making.



Project Management:

Oversee architectural design, implementation, and completion of numerous design and construction projects in keeping with Silver Cross objectives, design criteria, construction budgets and schedule needs.

Act as the central point of contact with various departments and their representatives.

Reviews invoices and pay applications for accuracy. Reconcile project total cost with approved financials.

The Construction Manager will lead the Silver Cross Construction Strategy meeting and OAC (Owners and Contractors) check-in meetings scheduled as needed.

Develop and maintaining close working relationships with design professionals, contractors, and vendors that will be involved in completing a well-integrated project.

Develop and maintain effective relationships with support groups, directors, managers, and supervisors of relevant departments. Maintain progress and positive attitude in situations involving uncertainty and remain flexible to change.

Coordinate internal staff from Building Services, Environmental Services, Infection Control, Materials Management/Distribution Services, Information Technology, Telecommunications, and other key departments in providing input or performing duties associated with designing, constructing, equipping, and occupying new or renovated facilities.

Work closely with Finance and Business Development providing site investigation, construction feasibility, conceptual design and budget, lead the design and construction, overseeing the process as the owner's representative to assure the delivery of a final product, Silver Cross goals for quality, time, and within budget.


Drives continuous improvement initiatives to streamline processes, enhance productivity and project management efficiencies, optimize project outcomes, and improve overall satisfaction, leveraging data-driven insights and lessons learned from previous projects.


Construction Management:

(Managing General Contractors/Construction Managers, Subcontractors and acting as General Contractor)


Supervise and manage all phases of renovation and construction, including planning, budgeting, scheduling, design coordination, and bids as required.

Develop and maintain project budgets.


Develop, communicate, and monitor project schedules and timelines for all projects while adhering to all Silver Cross policies and procedures.


Interact with designers, architects, engineers, other consultants, Silver Cross staff, landlords, and contractors in establishing detailed cost budgets and critical path, identifying key dates to meet timelines of major renovations.


Assists Corporate Counsel with review of construction related contract issues when they arise within Silver Cross, and coordinates all design and construction related insurance issues.

Negotiate costs during the bid process, for change orders, and in the final close-out of projects.

Review invoices and pay application requests for accuracy. Reconcile project total cost with approved financials.


Provide guidance and decision making with contracted architects, engineers, contractors regarding change orders to address issues encountered during construction.


Manage the vendor/contractor relationship to ensure attainment of contracted services. Review vendor/contractor proposals and invoices.


Monitor construction to ensure approved designs are carried out.


Maintains focus on concurrent projects in various stages of construction.


Partners to develop, maintain, and update Silver Cross design and construction standards

Coordinate subcontractors, identify and address problems that arise during construction.


Works closely with the Facilities Management teams to ensure that education needs are accounted for during the transition from construction to occupancy.


Responsible for the successful completion of project closeouts, conducting post occupancy evaluations, and ensuring receipt of maintenance manuals, as-builts, and project warranties.
