Job Responsibilities **This is a re-advertisement. Previous applicants are still being considered for this position
and do not need to re-apply** Assists other mechanics in performing routine maintenance and general repairs to various types of heavy equipment and all types of engines. Assists in making repairs to automatic and standard transmissions. Answers service calls in the field as necessary. Performs vehicle preventive maintenance service (up to and including level III) on state equipment (SCDOT Key Series 001 through 011). Troubleshoots vehicle electrical problems on state equipment (SCDOT Key Series 001 through 011) and trains in the use and understanding of various types of diagnostic equipment and repair manuals used in spotting and diagnosing equipment problems. Attends job related training as set up by SCDOT and supervisor. Checks fuel, water and lubricating oil levels to ensure that all engine and equipment are properly serviced. Performs small engine repairs (i.e. handheld equipment such as chain saws and weed eaters) on state equipment of simple or medium complexity. Performs light brake repairs on state equipment (SCDOT Key Series 001 through 011) and assists in making more complicated repairs to conventional brake systems, rebuilding carburetors, and in making repairs to fuel injection systems. Makes repairs to exhaust systems. Performs routine replacement of mufflers and tailpipes. Installs and repairs inclement weather equipment (i.e. snow plows, sand/salt spreaders). Assists as directed with the operation of Maintenance Shop during emergencies such as snow and ice, hurricanes, etc., and being on call for after hours emergencies. Assists with keeping the shop clean and order/organized. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements Six (6) months of work experience that is directly related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Completion of one (1) academic year of a South Carolina High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six (6) months of directly-related experience. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires working in a large garage setting and may perform duties in an uncomfortable position for long periods of time. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
