Job Summary:
The School of Dental Medicine (SDM) welcomes applications for full-time Dental Care Assistants to work and support the General Practice Residency (GPR). Primarily responsibilities include four-handed chair side dental assistance in all specialized dentistry (i.e., oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontics, endodontics, and restorative), patient preparation and positioning, clinical area preparation, use of sterile techniques and performing infection control procedures. Individuals will work with a variety of SDM undergraduate dental students, residents, staff, and faculty.
The General Practice Residency (GPR) program at the CU School of Dental Medicine is an intensive 12-month postgraduate program dedicated to enhancing a resident's experience and confidence with providing care to the general public and to medically complex and special needs patients in both an outpatient and hospital setting.
Key Responsibilities:
Chair Side Assistance (95%):
- Patient preparation and positioning
- Clinical area preparation for the treatment of patients
- Use of sterile techniques and infection control procedures
- Performs appropriate aseptic and sterilization techniques
- Prepares specialized instruments setups for undergraduate students, residents and faculty to be used during dental patient treatment
- Inspects appropriate instruments/tools for good condition/working order
- Performs dental intraoral and extraoral radiographs using appropriate technique, x-ray equipment and safety equipment
- Develops, mounts and identifies radiographic films
- Troubleshoots the scanner to make sure films are being developed with high quality
- Responsibility for training lower-level technicians
Clinical Education Support (5%):
- Support the educational mission of the SDM, including role modeling and assisting with coaching students on how to function as a dental assistant in both four-handed chairside activities and in clinical operations support.

Minimum Qualifications:
Dental Care I:
- One year of dental assisting experience
- Successful completion of an accredited dental assisting program may substitute for one year of experience. NOTE : If exercising the education substitution, applicants MUST attach a copy of their dental assisting certificate to their application materials no later than the closing date listed in the announcement.
- Must possess current valid CPR and/or BLS certification
Dental Care II:
- Two years of dental assisting experience
- Successful completion of an accredited dental assisting program may substitute for one year of experience. NOTE : If exercising the education substitution, applicants MUST attach a copy of their dental assisting certificate to their application materials no later than the closing date listed in the announcement.
- Must possess current valid CPR and/or BLS certification
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Surgical Assistant or Surgical Technologist License
- Recent experience working in a fast-paced dental environment
- Experience with clinical area preparation in a dental clinic and/or office.
- Experience taking x-rays
- Experience performing and developing digital dental radiographs.
- Experience in sterilizing dental tools, instruments and equipment.
- Experience working with students and faculty in a higher education and/or academic medical environment
- Experience working with multiple doctors
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to establish rapport with a wide variety of individuals
- Ability to prioritize and multi-task

- Strong oral communication skills
- Knowledge of dental terminology and instrumentation
- Knowledge of current dental materials, tools and instruments, and proper use and technique
- Familiarity with OSHA and HIPAA guidelines
- Must demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of dental materials, their use, maintenance and storage

The starting salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established as
Dental Care I $38,964 - $45,194.40
Dental Care II $42,948 - $49,826.40
The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
