Position: Substitute GM/Groundsman
Location: Maintenance Department (countywide)

GENERAL MAINTENANCE TITLE: General Maintenance - means personnel employed as helpers to skilled maintenance employees and to perform minor repairs to equipment and buildings of a county school system.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must be able to understand written and/or verbal instructions and trained to perform minor repairs to equipment and buildings. Should have three (3) years of experience as custodian. High school diploma or a general educational development certificate (GED) is required.
REPORTS TO: Director of Facilities and Maintenance and/or Principal
JOB GOALS: Maintains the school system's equipment and buildings in a clean, safe, attractive and comfortable manner to provide a pleasant and functional educational environment for the student and faculty.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: - Performs duties efficiently and productively.
- Help skilled maintenance employees and perform minor repairs to equipment and buildings.
- Does minor carpentry, cement repair, painting, plumbing, electrical and other building maintenance.
- Assembles, repairs and tears down bleachers, replaces furnace filters and may perform minor repairs and maintenance to boilers.
- Oils and cleans pumps and motors.
- Works on custodial crews in cleaning of building.
- Uses a variety of tools and equipment.
- May operate motor vehicles, grading, landscaping and ditching equipment.
- Stripes and waxes floors and shampoo rugs.
- Sweeps and mops classrooms, rest rooms, shower rooms, offices, halls, auditoriums, and other areas.
- Moves furniture, books and other objects and sets up equipment as directed.
- Washes windows, blackboards and walls.
- Checks security of building.
- Collects, dumps and burns trash.
- May cut grass, pick up papers and other objects.
- Shovel snow
- Routine building maintenance to include repairing of faucets, sink traps, flush meters, repair or replacement of door closures, repair hinges.
- Do minor electrical work such as replacing emergency battery packs in exit lights, replace broken switches, light bulbs.
- Repair furniture, hand railings
- Repair concrete patching, do painting and repair of small areas of damaged plaster.
- Other routine general maintenance as necessary or assigned.
- May direct parking at events.
- May act as a leadsman of a crew of custodial workers as assigned.
- To perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Push and pull minimum of 100 lbs.
- Lift and move minimum of 100 lbs.
- Kneeling, bending and crawling required in duties.
- Climbing stairs and ladder when necessary.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated
twice a year for employees with a continuing contract and three times a year for employees with a probationary contract. This is in accordance with provisions of the Hancock County Board of Education Policy on Evaluation of Service Personnel.
POSITION: Groundsman/Handyman CHARACTERISTICS OF POSITION: Under general supervision, performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in generalized building and grounds maintenance; some skilled work may be done as a trades helper in assisting a craftsman in work; and performs related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Cuts grass; trims shrubs and trees; fertilizes and feeds plants; rakes leaves and polices grounds; digs ditches; cuts down trees; erects snow fences; moves snow; snow plowing and driving snow plowing vehicle; salts and sands walkways, steps, driveways and roads; hauls furniture and other objects; burns trash; does minor carpentry, cement repair, painting, plumbing, electrical and other building maintenance work and assists skilled craftsmen in performing skilled tasks; assembles, repairs and tears down bleachers; replaces furnace filters and may perform minor repair and maintenance to boilers; oils and cleans pumps and motors; may work on custodial crews in the cleaning of buildings; uses a variety of tools and equipment; and may operate motor vehicles.

DESIRABLE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Training and Experience: Completion of a high school diploma or its equivalent and two years of general building and grounds labor experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Good knowledge of general building and grounds maintenance work, including use and care of the more common tolls and equipment. Ability to perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled building and grounds maintenance tasks; ability to do heavy manual labor; ability to follow written and oral instructions. Skill in the use of common maintenance tools and equipment.
