Job Summary
  • This position provides direct patient care at the surgical field. This individual assists the physician, anesthesiologist and other team members during the surgical procedure, precertifications and prior authorizations for medications. Responsible for equipment, room preparation, maintaining and assuring sterile technique and proper patient positioning under the direction of the Registered Nurse. Under the direction of the practitioner, maintains examination rooms and back office area, interacts with patients, obtains clinical history and performs tests as directed by the practitioner. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
  • Graduate from accredited Certified Surgical Technologist program.
  • Current Certification as Surgical Technologist or obtain Certification within one year of employment.
  • CPR certification or must obtain at next available class upon hire.
Preferred Job Requirements
  • One year experience in hospital or related health care setting, including clinical educational experience.
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities
  • Ability to read, write, and follow directions.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively and tactfully communicate with patients and their families and guests, co-workers, managers, providers and other hospital personnel on a one-to-one basis using appropriate grammar, vocabulary and word usage.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to carry out duties in a professional manner, as well as the ability to work well under stress.
  • Developed computer skills and the ability to learn and proficiently perform patient care applications, echarting, email and other standards applications related to the department operations and job function.
  • Excellent customer service skills with special emphasis on patient centered care.
  • Ability to promote compassion and a therapeutic environment.
  • Basic working understanding of the concepts of infection control principles to prevent the spread of infection to patients, self and others.
  • Ability to react appropriately to any environment or situation.
  • Ability manage several assignments simultaneously and appropriately prioritize based on caseload and patient needs.
  • Ability to be discreet and protect the integrity of any confidential matter or information encountered during the performance of job duties.
Working Conditions
  • Typical hospital clinical environment with frequent standing and walking.
  • Work subject to interruptions.
  • Risk of occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious, electrical and radiation hazards.
  • Works with protected health information.
  • Ability to work any shift, occasional extended hours, holidays and/or weekends based on the needs of the department.
  • Available to take call at the surgeons request
Physical and Mental Activities, Tools and Equipment
  • Standing, walking, stooping, bending, lifting, pushing and pulling to provide patient care and to utilize patient care devices necessary to perform duties in a safe manner.
  • Uses computer and other standard office equipment.
  • Uses patient care tools and equipment as they relate to area of clinical specialty.
