What you can expect to do here:
  • Provide expert guidance to clients across various sectors and projects in Western Canada, addressing regulatory concerns and recommending best management practices for vegetation and wetlands.
  • Identify and assess potential environmental constraints related to proposed developments, including wetlands, vegetation, listed species, and invasive species.
  • Lead and mentor junior and intermediate staff during field assessments and office tasks, ensuring adherence to industry standards and facilitating their professional growth through on-the-job training.
  • Prepare and review comprehensive reports for projects spanning multiple sectors, such as oil and gas, transportation, mining, municipal infrastructure, and renewable energy.
  • Analyze, evaluate, and interpret environmental data, delivering results that align with the scope and objectives of each project.
  • Develop and contribute to project proposals and budgets, ensuring accuracy and alignment with client expectations and project goals.
  • Support business development efforts alongside project managers and directors, fostering strong client relationships and identifying new opportunities.
  • Mentor junior and intermediate staff as part of WSP's Career Development Program, helping them advance their skills and careers.
  • Contribute actively to WSP's biological sciences leadership group, providing thought leadership and fostering cross-team collaboration.
  • Engage with clients, staff, and regulatory agencies to ensure smooth project execution and compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Champion the implementation of corporate and client safety programs to ensure a safe and compliant work environment.


What you'll bring to WSP:
  • Education: B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Botany, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Sciences, or a related field, with specialized knowledge or experience in vegetation and wetland ecosystems.
  • Expertise: Over 10 years of plant identification experience, with a focus on prairie, wetland, boreal , and/or arctic/tundra landscapes.
  • Consulting Experience: More than 10 years of experience in a consulting environment, specifically in an Ecologist role (vegetation or wetlands), or a similar capacity.
  • Leadership: Proven experience in a senior role, providing mentorship and guidance to junior and intermediate staff, as well as offering expert advice to clients.
  • Wetland Expertise: Demonstrated experience in wetland mapping, classification, and associated fieldwork is essential.
  • Impact Assessment: Extensive experience in completing and reviewing impact assessments, wetland permitting reports, and other environmental documentation related to vegetation and wetlands.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: In-depth understanding of provincial and federal regulatory requirements for vegetation and wetland management, with a focus on compliance, guidelines, and best practices.
  • Imagery Interpretation and Classification: Proficient in using imagery interpretation techniques to delineate and classify wetlands and vegetation types across western Canada.
  • GIS Proficiency: Basic GIS skills with a strong understanding of spatial analysis and mapping techniques.
  • Multidisciplinary Experience: Proven ability to collaborate on multidisciplinary projects, ensuring integrated environmental solutions.
  • Professional Registration: Registered with a professional association (e.g., P.Biol, P.Ag, R.T.Biol.).
  • Communication Skills: Strong technical writing and oral communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to clearly present complex ecological information.
