Job Summary
The Systems Engineer is accountable for applying specialized knowledge and expertise in preparing projects; completing designs and specifications to meet specific operational requirements; and providing assistance for requirement management, verification and validation of the systems and equipment in the Section's area of responsibility. This position usually works under the general guidance of Senior Systems Engineers.

The Systems Engineer will increase our capacity to design, build, and document robust systems, enhance integration, and ensure alignment with Nav Canada's strategic objectives.

Key Accountabilities:
  • Contribute to NAV CANADA's overall national capital program with growing experience and knowledge of specialty systems function and field utilization.
  • Prepare detailed plans, system designs, and specifications for the provision and implementation of systems to meet operational, technical and safety requirements.
  • Build processes and test cases in accordance with Engineering Standards.
  • Provide documentation, training and change management support in transitioning design into operation.
  • The Systems Engineer, as required, will also assist a Senior Systems Engineer in the development of complex projects.
  • Actively support a Safety and Quality culture within the Specialty, which ultimately will be reflected in the quality of the finished product delivered to the client groups.
  • Support the build and integration of complex applications and lab readiness, including analyzing current systems, designing improvements, and aligning architectures with regulatory and safety requirements.
  • Contribute to integration efforts, executing test plans, debugging, and enhancing system interoperability across hardware, software, and network components.
  • Support ongoing project tasks, contribute to system requirements, and assist in documentation to support effective project execution.


Job Requirements

Education:
  • Graduation with a minimum of a bachelor's degree from a recognized university in electrical, electronics, or computer engineering.


Experience:
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in Systems Engineering.
  • Experience in integrating, validating and verification of complex, safety-critical systems.
  • Experience in creating test cases, conducting system integration tests, and validating functionality.
  • Experience with data analysis tools to interpret performance, monitor KPIs, and optimize system functionality.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban) for adaptive responses to project needs.


Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of complex and safety critical systems and equipment used in a 24/7/365 operation.
  • Knowledge of system requirements aligned with regulatory standards (ED-109).
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated skills in project management methodologies.
  • Knowledge of theory and principles of engineering science, standards and of practices in specialized field of engineering.
  • Knowledge of networking (TCP/IP, UDP) and communication protocols AMQP for reliable data exchange.
  • Knowledge of VISIO, JIRA, Azure DevOps, and similar tools for task management and documentation.


Abilities:
  • Ability to identify problem areas, obtain and analyse data.
  • Ability to design scalable, modular architectures ensuring high reliability and seamless interoperability within the existing infrastructure.
  • Strong diagnostic skills for resolving technical issues in development, testing, or deployment phases.
  • Skilled in creating and maintaining comprehensive documentation, including ICDs, specifications, and user guides.
  • Ability to convey complex technical details to non-technical stakeholders for alignment on project goals.
  • Task prioritization to support timely delivery of system engineering responsibilities.

Working conditions:
  • Hybrid: This position is based at the Ottawa Technical Systems Centre (TSC) and requires a minimum of three (3) days on-site.
  • Travel may be required on occasion.
