Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Lead Medical Physicist the Medical Physicist provides physics and other specialized skills to
support the technical requirements of planning and treating radiation therapy patients in the department of radiation
oncology; assists in managing the radiation safety program and assures that radioisotopes and radiation generating
equipment are used and operated safely and effectively.

1. Essential functions:
A. Assisting in the interviewing and selection process of physicists dosimetrist and therapists.
B. Assisting in the evaluation and purchase of equipment and the implementation of service
contracts and coordinating service and maintenance with Bio-Med and the vendors.
C. Measuring machine outputs and calibrating to ensure compliance with standards of good practice and
applicable state and federal regulations relating to radiation phenomena.
D. Assists in the radiation safety program for external beam therapy and brachytherapy and ensure
compliance with relevant state and federal guidelines and licensing requirements.
E. Receiving logging registering and assuming responsibility for radioactive materials from receipt of
materials through decay and disposal of materials as per established protocols of the Nuclear Regulatory
Committee.
H. Performing room surveys or additional measurements as needed instructing nursing and other hospital
employees on radiation precautions and self-protection settings rules and posting regulations for
personnel and visitors.
I. Participating in medical conferences and attending meetings were patient and methods are discussed
and participating on committees as directed.
J. Assist with the development and evaluation of new devices protocols or design of equipment change in
treatment planning research treatment policies etc.
K. Adheres to and supports established department policies procedures objectives quality assurance
safety environmental and infection control and assists in the implementation of quality assurance
programs.
L. Adhere to Joint Commission and American College of Radiology standards of care.
2. Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
A. Demonstrate the necessary skills to teach junior physicists dosimetrists therapists and students both
formally and informally.
B. Demonstrates analytical and organizational skills to enable one to implement necessary safety programs
and regulations.
C. Requires a high level of knowledge in radiotherapy and its application combined with the knowledge and
its application combined with the knowledge of state/federal agencies regulating the use of radioactive
materials.
D. Demonstrates a high level of communication skills to effectively communicate via written reports and
through personal contact with staff physicians regional institutions and patients.
E. Requires advanced mathematical skills necessary to compute radiotherapy levels calibrations of
equipment and research new radiation devices and methodologies.

3. Working Conditions:
A. Exposure to radioactive isotopes during the set up and administration of patient treatment.
B. High level of mental/visual demands while performing calculations of radiotherapy dosage.
4. Other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

MS in Medical physics or related field. Ph.D. in Medical Physics is preferred.

Board Certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or the American Board of Medical Physics in Radiation Physics or the Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine. Board eligible candidates as defined by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) must attain certification in therapeutic medical physics within three years from the date of hire as physicist
