P osition SummarynAt Stony Brook Medicine, the T&R Center Licensed Practical Nurses in our Labor & Delivery perform tasks and responsibilities within the framework of case finding, health teaching, health counseling, and the provision of supportive and restorative care under the direction of a Registered Nurse, Licensed Physician, or other licensed health care provider. The T & R Center Licensed Practical Nurses observe patients for symptoms and reactions to treatments, treat patients for physical maladies as directed and under close supervision, attend to patients personal needs, and perform a variety of other general duties.nnThis title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).nnFor the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In May 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non-competitive and the official probationary period will begin.nnAt a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.nnDuties of a T&R Center Licensed Practical Nurse in our Labor & Delivery may include the following but are not limited to:nnUnder the direction of the registered nurse, performs delegated patient care activities.nTakes vital signs and identifies changes in patient condition manifested by patient and reports such changes to the Physician or Registered Nurse. Reports/ documents appropriate care information.nAttends to patients daily living, hygienic and simple human needs.nAssists the registered nurse with the preoperative preparation of the patient for assigned surgical procedures, including prepping and positioning of the patient.nAssembles equipment, supplies, sutures, and instruments for assigned surgical procedure.nAssists in cleaning, restocking and reconfiguring the operating room between procedures and at the completion of the case.nAssists in restocking storage and equipment supply areas.nAttends inservice programs and completes annual mandates.nCommunicates instrumentation needs to CSS.nAssists in the preparation of equipment for special procedures.nnWorking Conditions:nWorking conditions may involve exposure to infectious disease, blood, body fluids and/or tissue as well as other unpleasant elements such as accidents, injuries and illness. May be exposed to and be required to handle varying unpredictable, emergency and crisis situations. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries. This position is classified by OSHA as Category 1.nQualificationsnRequired: Must possess or be eligible to obtain a license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in New York State.nPreferred: Previous hospital acute care experience. Labor & Delivery experience.nAcute care is defined as medical services provided for illnesses that are short-term (usually less than 30 days), intense, and have a relatively severe to very severe course, requiring knowledge and expertise in the vigilant monitoring of subtle changes in the patient's condition, as well as ability to quickly recognize and identify potential problems and conditions resulting from a previous disease.nn* As part of the onboarding process, we require a copy of your current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
