Summary

The Assistant Materials Manager supports the Materials Manager in ensuring the effective procurement, acquisition, and storage of goods and services in alignment with the company’s business plan and operational goals. This role plays a key part in managing purchasing and inventory control while ensuring adherence to company policies and maintaining cost efficiency.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the procurement of materials per requirements and company policies.
• Support warehouse operations to ensure proper material handling, accounting, and control.
• Monitor and achieve key plant metrics, including inventory levels, freight-in costs, and timely deliveries.
• Ensure adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs) for hot lists, EPPM, short reports, and kitting processes.
• Provide updates to management on issues affecting business operations.
• Aid in scheduling and directing the activities of the Purchasing and Inventory Control departments to meet production needs.
• Support the establishment and maintenance of a master schedule and manufacturing planning functions.
• Monitor internal and external cost indicators and maintain records of vendor and cost histories.
• Contribute to the development of procurement standards for cost containment and operational efficiency.
• Ensure material quality by coordinating routine inspections and resolving vendor deficiencies.
• Help maintain accurate and perpetual inventory records for manufacturing materials.
• Assist in reviewing BOM releases against existing inventory for cost efficiency.
• Provide recommendations for inventory level reviews (e.g., Min/Max, MRP min) at regular intervals.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Materials Manager or supervisor.

Required Skills/Abilities

• Strong organizational and planning abilities.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Proven interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively at all organizational levels.
• Knowledge of manufacturing cycles and market dynamics.
• Proficiency in inventory reporting systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in materials or procurement management in a heavy manufacturing environment.
• Certification in Materials Management is preferred.
