Performs a wide variety of radiographic examinations and related procedures to produce quality images/films in the more complex and difficult special procedures requiring advanced knowledge and techniques. Uses both the specialized and general radiographic equipment and instruments. Processes forms, paperwork and other material related to all examinations. Prepares and positions patients, providing reassurances, as required. Verifies laboratory results and prepares proper contrast medias for use in examinations. Maintains records of all examinations and procedures. Complies with radiation and other safety-related rules and regulations.
Performs Radiographic and special procedures.
- Receives orders for designated examinations, prepares room, reviews charts for laboratory results, prepares contrast medias, sterile trays, catheters and guide wires. (+) As required, transports patients on stretchers or wheelchair to and from examining room and other areas. Arranges patients in precise positions ensuring rapid film changer is on proper operating order. Coordinates timing of initiation of filming with administration of medications.
- Sets up and adjusts ancillary equipment such as power injector, pressure monitor, special cameral and etc. Adjusts equipment to provide varying positioning of patient and varying angle exposures within time constraints imposed by medications.
- Assists Radiologist with insertion of various catheters, vessel dilators and guide wires using proper technique for sterile procedure.
- Occasionally required to stabilize totally incapacitated patients by attaching and arraying immobilization and support devices. (+) Required to lift and move patients on special procedure board.
- Checks and adjusts for proper voltage, amperage, duration of exposure, etc. making any required computations and calibrations.
- Radiographs all parts of the body and processes films using automated equipment.
Performs related duties. - Transports portable equipment to patient units or Operating Room and takes required exposure at bedside.
- Maintains radiation exposure levels to minimize patient dose. Adjusts X-Ray equipment for proper centering and angle of exposure to designated body areas. Arranges shielding devices. Stands behind protective barrier or wears lead apron to meet ALARA requirements.
- Protects visitor and general public from unnecessary radiation exposure.
- Attends 66% of staff meetings.
- Attends inservices.
- Acknowledges all tests to generate patient charges on a daily basis.
- In the absence of supervisor, assumes designated responsibilities of that position. Distributes work assignments.
- Participates in the on-call rotation.
Provides communication. - Explains procedures to be performed to each patient. (+) Gives preparatory instructions. Provides reassurance to anxious patients.
- (+) Reads reports to authorized staff over phones. (+) Answers inquiries and provides requested assistance on matters dealing with Ultrasound, CT Scan, Nuclear Medicine and MRI services.
Insures high level of quality control. - Maintains equipment and work area in clean and orderly conditions.
- When using portable equipment in Operating Room during surgical procedures, follows all regulation dealing with sterile techniques and related matters.
- (+) Maintains updated working knowledge of departmental filing and record keeping systems. Attaches identifying information to films. (+) Copies and packages films for referral to outside Hospital.
- (+) In absence of clerical staff, performs a variety of department clerical and related tasks.
- Completes STAT reports and delivers to proper personnel.
Maintains Inventory/Purchasing functions. - Maintains adequate PAR levels for radiology inventory.
- Researches supplies and products for radiology and CT Scan.
- Maintains liaison responsibilities with approved vendors and Department Director.
- Maintains purchasing documentation for history and purchasing/budgeting requirements.
LEAD TECH ROLE EXPECTATIONS #1: Analyze the work to be done and plan for effective utilization of available resources.
- Plans assignments so that appropriate coverage is provided for all patients and continuity of care is maintained.
- Supports staff in prioritization of work to be done.
- Acts as a role model in organizing tasks and personnel into an effective work plan.
- Anticipates potential problems and assists in problem solving as needed.
- Delegates duties to appropriate unit personnel as necessary.
- Schedules staff to minimize use of overtime and ensures efficient use of resources.
- Reviews revenue and expenses on a monthly basis (budget compared to actual) and recommends areas of growth and areas to reduce expenses if needed.
- Recommends equipment to improve quality of services and participates in the selection and installation of equipment as needed.
LEAD TECH ROLE EXPECTATIONS #2: Promotes a collaborative relationship with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Communicates with clarity and composure.
- Collaborates effectively with physicians, supervisors, multidisciplinary staff, and other departments.
- Provides effective collaboration as required in order to ensure approximate and timely services.
- Completes appropriate performance appraisals on time.
- As required by JCAHO, completes competency checklist on each employee during annual evaluation process.
- Increase the focus of support staff towards customer service.
- Handles disciplinary issues in accordance with Bristol Hospital policy. Updates Director as needed.
- Facilitates smooth transition regarding coverage issues.
- Assess the distribution of tasks and responsibilities as currently assigned.
- Ensures the services are in compliance with all regulatory standards, including but not limited to JCAHO, CMS and DEP.
- Reviews feedback from patients and makes necessary adjustments to improve patient satisfaction.
LEAD TECH ROLE EXPECTATIONS #3: Maintain effective working relationships with the administrative supervisor.
- Communicates effectively and acts as an information resource regarding modality specific policies and procedures.
Educational / Minimum Requirements: High school and two years accredited program in Radiologic Technology.
State/Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirements: Radiologic Technologist registered through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, (ARRT) and licensed in the state of Connecticut. Advanced certificate in Intervention or Vascular Imaging is highly recommended.
Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements: General orientation at time of hire. Fire/Safety/Infection Control annually. Other programs as mandated by Hospital.
Special Requirements: Registered with one year experience as a Radiologic Technologist I.
Physical Requirements: On feet most of the day with lifting greater than 50 lbs. occasionally and up to 35 lbs. routinely. Physical agility including but limited to bending, stooping, walking, reaching, standing, kneeling, pulling, pushing and twisting. Manipulate radiology, special equipment and data input. Hearing and sight corrected to normal. Ability to verbalize so the average person can comprehend. Assess patient's response to medications and procedures.
Work Environment: Exposure to radiation; patient elements, chemical frame. Frequent changes in lighting levels with variations in room temperature.
Cognitive Requirements: Excellent oral communication skills, literate in English. Excellent reading and mathematical skills, ability to read, comprehend and execute complicated and detailed written and oral instructions. Good organizational skills, excellent decision making skills and good writing skills.
