Job Summary

The CN identifies and implements nursing interventions and evaluates results for a wide variety of patient populations, directs and acts as resource to other members of the nursing team as assigned and promotes compliance and support for policies. The primary responsibilities for this position consist of providing total, comprehensive, continuous and patient centered care which includes: assessing, documenting, planning, implementing, teaching, developing, and evaluating a comprehensive nursing plan of care; delivering direct patient care; ensuring patient satisfaction; training and delegating duties; and adhering to University policies and procedures as well as federal, state and local regulations.
Autonomous nursing care is the ability of a nurse to assess and provide nursing actions as appropriate for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. The nurse is expected to practice autonomously consistent with ANA Standards of Practice and Professional Performance. Independent judgment is expected to be exercised within the context of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care.
Provides direct patient care to a diversified patient population. Applies knowledge, experience and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, set priorities, and use abstract thought to evaluate clinical situations. Participates in patient and staff education. Demonstrates leadership skills. Demonstrates accountability for own practices as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Valid California Registered Nurse License without restriction.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or UC Davis Health CPR.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support or UC Davis Health (ACLS) Certification
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Three (3) years of cardiac nursing on a telemetry unit or ICU within the last three years.
  • Care of Ventricular Assist Patients.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Ability to utilize medical terminology appropriately.
  • Knowledge of current trends in nursing.
  • Commitment to excellence in patient care.
  • Demonstrates accountability and professionalism.
  • Adapts to change in a positive, professional and productive manner.
  • Knowledge of legal implications in clinical practice and documentation.
  • Knowledge of performance improvement and evidence-based practice.
  • Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care, taking into consideration protective interventions, development (behavioral and physical) and physiological characteristics specific to the patients.
  • Expert knowledge in the care of the VAD patient population. Must have demonstrated ability to work in an independent clinical leadership capacity, with the ability to appropriately set priorities.
  • Competence with curriculum development, design, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Competence with interdisciplinary communication, to include participation in formal and impromptu patient care rounds and conferences.
  • Ability to be adaptable, flexible, excel with change, and comfortable in a dynamic environment.
  • Proven track record of collaboration and ability to remain focused on work product.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Windows and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to wear radiation safety apparel.

  • Certified Critical Care Nurse (CCRN)
  • Master in Nursing, MSN
  • 3 years cardiac ICU experience

Department Overview

The Heart and Vascular Center (HVC) at the UC Davis Medical Center is tasked with the responsibility of maintaining and improving the cardiovascular health for the populations of Northern California, Western Nevada, and Southern Oregon. The Department provides inpatient and outpatient invasive and non-invasive care. Located on the first floor of the UC Davis Medical Center the HVC operates 4 Cardiac Cathlabs, 2 Electrophysiology labs, and a hybrid operating room. The department provides all preop and post op care onsite; patients check in with the HVC and are admitted to the UC Davis following their procedures, if needed. In addition to invasive procedures, the HVC performs all inpatient and outpatient ECG and cardiac Echo based procedures for the hospital.

Department Specific Job Scope

The Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) Coordinator provides direct patient care, resources, coordination and/or case manages for patients along continuum of heart failure care. The incumbent integrates care with a multidisciplinary team to facilitate patients from preimplantation, to implantation, and into long term management. Other functions of the VAD coordinator include nursing process and practice, education, professional development, and customer service The VAD nurse coordinator applies experience and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, sets priorities, and uses abstract thought to evaluate clinical situations. The coordinator participates in staff education and population focused training. Further, they will demonstrate leadership skills and the ability to problem solve on a broad level. The candidate will facilitate critical thinking of staff when addressing patient care issues. This role will participate in the development and review of policies, procedures, and protocols of new and existing VAD services. The VAD coordinator reports directly to a Heart & Vascular Center Supervisor. The incumbent will demonstrate accountability for their own practices as defined by the Nurse Practice Act. This position requires carrying a pager and taking call on nights, weekends, and holidays.
