QUALIFICATIONS
Required : Typing, word processing or data entry skills at 50 wpm, excellent spelling, math and problem-solving skills; excellent pronunciation and communication skills; ability to organize work and attend to detail; one year clerical experience including telephone skills; legible handwriting.
Preferred : Previous switchboard/PBX, call system, medical terminology experience.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS
Must be able to accommodate fast efficient pace. Sitting for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift up to 40lbs and push a wheelchair up to 250lbs. Able to concentrate with constant interruptions and noise. Assist a patient in and out of a chair, wheelchair, or from an automobile. 20/25 vision with correction and good hearing.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Answers incoming telephone lines; route calls to appropriate coworker. Identifies self when answering phone as part of greeting. Takes complete and accurate patient messages for doctors and/or nursing (patient name, phone number, doctor's name, etc.), and routes message through EMR.
  • Performs department patient, visitor reception, and directs patient to the appropriate location.
  • Obtains and verifies insurance and billing information. Able to accurately process information for all insurance types as well as obtains the necessary information for insurance types that are not familiar.
  • Prepares paperwork used during patient care in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates sound judgment in determining urgency of phone call and appropriate method of communication.
  • Maintains strict patient confidentiality of all information.
  • Schedules patient appointments following clinic guidelines in EMR. Reschedules appointments as needed.
  • Communicates effectively, both in person and on the telephone and is able to work and interact with a variety of personality types.
  • Trains and orients new department staff.
  • Explains clinic procedures, such as clinic hours, and department locations
  • Identifies patient concerns and contacts appropriate department for resolution.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of departmental and medical center policies and procedures.
  • Maintains competency in all position responsibilities.
