Job Title: Environmental Health and Safety Specialist

Schedule: Monday - Friday, from 8am - 5pm

Location: Stokesdale, NC

Department: Safety

Reports To: Environmental Health and Safety Manager


Jon Purpose

  • The purpose of the Health & Safety Manager is to initiate and implement a safety standard and culture, train employees on safety policies and practices, conduct regular inspections, generate health and safety assessment reports, OSHA compliance and ensure that all occupational guidelines and regulations are adhered to.


Main Responsibilities and Keyt Tasks

  • Conduct site Safety Orientations for new hires, contractors, and visitors.
  • Achieve an accident-free workplace through careful management of the HS critical elements including policies and values, legal requirements, planning, implementation and operation, monitoring and measuring, management review and annual assessment.
  • Ensuring that management is advised on and understands all matters relating to the Safety of personnel, such as safe working practices, equipment and Safety training.
  • Carrying out risk assessments, assessing workplace hazards, considering how risks could be reduced, formulating preventative measures including safe working procedures/safe systems of work and monitoring conformance.
  • Carrying out regular site inspections to check policies and procedures are being properly implemented.
  • Making changes to working practices that are safe and comply with legislation.
  • Preparing health and safety strategies and developing internal policy for their site
  • Leading site in-house training with managers and employees about health and safety issues and risks; and maintaining records of same.
  • Organizing and controlling regular random safety inspection audits of all areas, recording the results, producing reports that suggest improvements; and submitting them to Plant Management.
  • Investigating and recording any incident, accident or dangerous occurrences.
  • Ensuring emergency response procedures are maintained and updated as required.
  • Ensuring the safe installation of equipment.
  • Advising on a range of specialist areas, e.g. fire regulations, hazardous substances, noise, safeguarding machinery and occupational diseases.
  • Conducting inspections and identifying hazards and HS violations.
  • Providing solutions and intervention strategies for hygiene, health, and safety hazards.
  • Generating assessment documentation, incident and accident reports, and health and safety manuals.
  • Preparing and submitting health and safety compliance documents to the relevant organizations.
  • Keeping abreast of the latest HS trends, policies, regulations, and best practices.


Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in safety management, or similar preferred.
  • Familiar with ISO 14001 and 45001.
  • OSHA 30hr or 511/MESH/IMESH/ASP certification.
  • Forklift Trainer Certification preferred.
  • A minimum of two years' experience in Health and Safety in a manufacturing environment.
  • Proven track record of successful federal, state and local compliance in air, water, hazardous and solid waste.
  • Proven record of building successful teams and working indirectly with others to accomplish difficult tasks. Teamwork is important to this client and successful candidate will be someone who understands how to create that culture.
  • Detailed knowledge of relevant regulations such as OSHA and ANSI.
  • The ability to read and interpret safety data sheets.
  • Proficiency in computer programs such as MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong leadership and training abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Acute attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
