Job Description

Our Mission is to extend the healing ministry of Christ.

We are more than healthcare. We are a family of caregivers who see what we do as a calling and treat every person, every time, as if they were a loved one. We don’t just heal what hurts; we ease minds and encourage spirits by providing a more personal level of care than ever before—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Our mission is to Extend the Healing Ministry of Christ, which starts with caring for others with uncommon compassion and going above and beyond to make those we serve feel loved.

Wellness is at the core of what we do, focusing on living a better life today and always. We want everyone to Feel Whole, and we see our work as a calling. This is how we make a difference. With our whole-person care, expertise, and world-class resources, we strive to provide an exceptional experience for all. With hospitals and facilities in over 9 states, our consistent approach to healthcare allows us to live our mission and ensure that our communities are living fuller, healthier lives.

GENERAL SUMMARY

AdventHealth is making significant advancements in Artificial Intelligence, dedicated to transforming both internal operational processes and consumer experiences through AI-driven solutions. We are looking for an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Engineer to join our organization, reporting directly to the Chief AI Officer .

This role will serve as a critical interface in our AI Governance process by evaluating potential AI solutions from third-party vendors—assessing them for efficacy, compliance, and alignment with organizational goals. In addition to vendor evaluations, the AI Engineer will play a hands-on role in designing, developing, and deploying in-house AI solutions for specific IT use cases, contributing directly to AdventHealth’s innovative technology initiatives.

The ideal candidate will combine strong technical skills in machine learning (ML), deep learning, data engineering, and software development with an understanding of AI ethics and governance. By working collaboratively with stakeholders across the organization, the AI Engineer will help ensure that all AI-driven initiatives are responsibly and effectively implemented to support AdventHealth’s strategic objectives and mission.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

AI Governance & Vendor Evaluation

  • Collaborate with the Chief AI Officer and cross-functional teams to assess AI features and solutions from third-party vendors.
  • Conduct rigorous technical due diligence on vendor offerings, including evaluating algorithms, scalability, security, compliance, and ethical considerations.
  • Provide data-driven recommendations to leadership regarding vendor viability and alignment with AdventHealth strategic goals.

AI Model Development & Deployment

  • Design, develop, and implement advanced AI models (e.g., machine learning, deep learning, NLP, computer vision) to address specific business and IT challenges.
  • Implement end-to-end AI solutions, including data ingestion, preprocessing, model training, validation, deployment, and monitoring.
  • Collaborate with data scientists, data engineers, and software developers to ensure seamless integration of AI models into existing AdventHealth systems and workflows.

Data Pipeline & Infrastructure

  • Collaborate with IT and data engineering teams to design robust data pipelines and ML infrastructure that facilitate reliable model training and deployment.
  • Utilize cloud-based computing and data integration services (e.g., Azure, Data Factory, Snowflake) to build scalable and secure AI solutions.

Research, Experimentation & Innovation

  • Stay current with the latest advancements in AI, ML, and related fields; propose and conduct proof-of-concept projects to test new techniques and tools.
  • Integrate emerging AI technologies into practical solutions that enhance efficiency, reduce cost, and improve patient and consumer outcomes.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Communication

  • Work closely with internal stakeholders—such as clinicians, IT, and operational leaders—to identify AI opportunities and define success metrics.
  • Present complex technical concepts and findings to non-technical audiences, ensuring clarity on potential impacts and benefits.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior AI professionals, fostering a culture of continuous learning.

Ethical & Responsible AI

  • Advocate for ethical AI development and usage within AdventHealth, ensuring compliance with regulations, organizational values, and patient privacy requirements.
  • Develop guidelines for responsible model deployment and ensure ongoing monitoring for bias, fairness, and overall performance.

Documentation & Knowledge Sharing

  • Maintain thorough documentation of AI models, algorithms, and system architectures for future reference and scalability.
  • Share best practices and lessons learned across the organization, contributing to a knowledge base that enhances AdventHealth’s AI maturity.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE STRONGLY PREFERRED

Technical Expertise

  • Experience with state-of-the-art machine learning libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn) and deep learning frameworks.
  • Hands-on experience in data engineering and MLOps best practices, including containerization (Docker), CI/CD pipelines, and version control (Git).
  • Strong understanding of cloud-based computing and data integration (e.g., Azure, AWS, GCP).

AI Governance & Ethics

  • Familiarity with AI governance frameworks, responsible AI guidelines, and compliance issues such as HIPAA or GDPR.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate third-party AI solutions for performance, security, and ethical considerations.

Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills

  • Adept at transforming complex data into actionable insights using advanced statistics or ML techniques.
  • Ability to design experiments, conduct hypothesis testing, and apply best practices for model validation.

Healthcare Experience (Preferred)

  • Familiarity with healthcare data (electronic health records, claims data, patient engagement data) and relevant standards (e.g., HL7, FHIR).
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements in healthcare and the implications for AI and data privacy.

Effective Communication

  • Skilled at translating complex technical concepts into clear, concise information for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proven ability to communicate findings through data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau) and presentations.

Team Collaboration

  • Experience working in cross-functional teams, ideally with data scientists, product managers, clinicians, and IT professionals.
  • Demonstrated success in mentoring and guiding junior team members or cross-training peers in AI-related areas.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED

  • Previous experience in large-scale AI/ML deployments within a healthcare environment.
  • Publication history or conference presentations showcasing AI or machine learning work.
  • Familiarity with additional programming languages (e.g., Java, C++, Scala) and distributed computing frameworks (e.g., Spark, Hadoop).

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
  • 4+ years of relevant, hands-on experience in AI/ML development, encompassing model design, deployment, and operationalization.
  • Practical experience building, evaluating, and implementing machine learning or deep learning models in production environments.
  • Experience with data architecture, data governance, and cloud-based ML solutions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED

  • PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or a related field.
  • Healthcare experience in a large health system or a health technology context.
  • Prior involvement in AI ethics committees or similar governance boards.
