Opportunity summary:
Sheppard Pratt hospital programs, in Towson, MD and Elkridge, MD serve individuals with acute psychiatric and behavioral health needs requiring inpatient and day hospitalization services. Program units including Child inpatient, adolescent inpatient, adult general inpatient and day hospital, geriatric inpatient, adult thought disorders inpatient and day hospital, co-occurring adult inpatient unit, geriatric inpatient unit, and specialty units; eating disorders, neuro/intellectual disabilities, psychiatric urgent care unit and trauma disorders. A patient's average stay is 7 - 10 days. Treatment focus is on stabilization of psychiatric symptoms, skill acquisition and application for patients to transition safely back into the community. Placement on a particular unit is not guaranteed.
This is an unpaid preceptorship.
Opportunity time frame:
Approximately 120-180 hours per preceptorship starting in Jan-April. The start date is flexible.
Eligibility requirements:
• Current Student of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program
• Masters or doctoral level student
• Student must be enrolled at an academic Institution that has an existing contract/affiliation agreement with Sheppard Pratt. Please click this link to see the list of participating universities.
• Students applying to this rotation must be a license nurse (BSN)
Learning model:
Nurse Practitioner/DNP is part of the continuum of care and collaborates with the multidisciplinary team. Supervision is provided in a 1:1 supervision model by an assigned licensed Nurse practitioner or physician. No telehealth, preceptorship is strictly in person.
Student expectations:
Student expectations include learning 1:1 from a licensed NP or physician. Readiness to learn from all experiences and patient population. Patience and compassion when working with this challenging patient population. The preceptorship allows students the opportunity to be in the community where they will work with a professional in the same field.
