Job Description

The genetic nurse practitioner provides services to clients and their families. This includes comprehensive initial and subsequent health history and physical exams to gather information regarding cancer risk and other health problems. The genetic nurse practitioner will also provide pre and post test counseling to clients and their families and make appropriate referrals as needed. Will work in collaboration with ECCC Physicians and Director of Clinical Services for development of Cancer Risk Assessment Program.
1. Pedigree construction of at least 3 generations. This includes obtaining informed consent as needed and reviewing medical records to create accurate pedigrees
2. Interpretation of genetic data and tests results and providing counseling in collaboration with ECCC Physicians.
3. Works closely with physicians and colleagues in ECCC and CHH to provide continuity of care and superior services.
4. Provide education to clients and families regarding treatment options and cancer screening services.
5. Provide genetic testing and risk assessment lectures/seminars
6. Attend and participate in weekly tumor boards
Clinical:
1. Performs comprehensive initial and episodic health history and physical examinations in order to identity cancer risk, existing or potential health problems
2. Initiates appropriate diagnostic, therapeutic, medical and nursing actions in conjunction with ECCC physicians (this includes genetic testing and disclosing test results)
3.Provides follow up care including acute and routine examinations
4. Triage patient problem calls in office which require medical attention
5. Provides health education to patient and families (high risk educations, anticipatory teaching, clinical teaching regarding biopsy results)
6. Provides monitoring and continuity of care between referring physicians and other health care setting
7. Provides patient and family counseling in regards to psychological and psychosocial issues related to cancer risk and disease state. Initiates referrals as needed
8. Collaborates with nursing and medical staff to ensure standards continuity of advanced practice care is current and of the highest quality.
Education:

  • Master of Nursing Practitioner is required
  • ONS certification is preferred
  • APON certification is preferred
  • Nurse Practitioner Certification is required
  • Advance Practice Genetics Nurse is preferred
  • Current RN license in West Virginia is required
  • Advance Practice RN license is required
  • ISONG membership is preferred
Experience:
  • Minimum of 5 +years Position related experience in genetic health nursing
  • Post graduate level training is preferred
The kind of position related experience includes:
  • Knowledge of oncology as well as general adult health
  • Working knowledge of cancer genetics and cancer risk counseling
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practice issues effecting oncology and cancer genetics
  • Utilizes supervisory and management skills to coordinate research projects
  • Participates in evaluation and quality improvement activates related to patient care and ambulatory care operations.
  • Knowledge of screening tests, chemo preventative agents, and prophylactic surgical options as appropriate
