Why does the job exist?
The HVAC Technician will perform monthly preventative maintenance duties for their assigned campus. With the assistance of the Campus Plant Operator and a General Maintenance position, the HVAC technician will install, service and maintain heating and cooling systems and will repair HVAC units as necessary. Additionally, this position will ensure all routine preventive maintenance
schedules are accurately updated and loaded into the division's database of record (AiM system).
How does it get done?
Key responsibilities include:
- Installing, repairing and maintaining HVAC systems, including air conditioning units and refrigeration equipment.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot HVAC system issues and make necessary repairs.
- Perform maintenance and service repairs on HVAC systems to ensure optimal performance.
- Install new units and/or replace parts on existing units.
- Repair and/or replace defective parts in units and equipment.
- Work with team members to complete installation and repair projects.

New Mexico State employees and visitors to State buildings.
Ideal Candidate
- HVAC Certifications MM 98 preferred, MM 3 and 4 required.
- 2-5 years' experience working in HVAC required.
- An understand of how to install, repair, maintain and troubleshooting complex HVAC systems.
Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or equivalent and one (1) year experience in heating, air conditioning, ventilation, and refrigeration maintenance and/or installing and repairing refrigeration and heating systems. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling one (1) year may substitute for the required experience.

Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Physical stamina and strength is crucial for this profession. Heavy lifting, climbing, kneeling and bending for extended periods.
Must be able to lift 50 lbs, stand for extended periods of time, climb ladders, work in inclement weather (cold and hot). Must be able to carry tools and equipment from building to building on large campuses. Will be periodically "on call" for emergencies, including weekends and holidays.
