Davies Imperial Coatings, Inc. seeks an innovative and solutions-driven R&D Scientist with a strong, hands-on formulation background. The primary responsibilities of the R&D Scientist are the development and commercialization of industrial coatings products in support of our expansion into the industrial coatings market. These industrial coatings products include but are not limited to, alkyds, TP acrylics, melamine-bake, 2K epoxies, and 2K polyurethanes in water- and solvent-based technologies. 


Role Description

This is a full-time on-site role for a Research and Development Scientist at Davies Imperial Coatings, Inc. in Hammond, Indiana. The qualified R&D Scientist’s responsibilities further include but are not limited to:


  • Maintain expertise and be at the forefront of identifying new technologies & drivers within the industrial coatings market.
  • Apply coatings knowledge & expertise towards the development of new, and maintenance of existing coatings formulations.
  • Strong understanding and application of structure-properties relationships across all chemistries.
  • Define target performance requirements, typically in collaboration with sales or direct customer communication.
  • Design appropriate experimental approaches to complete projects by set deadlines.
  • Prepare test panels and execute application testing for various end market uses.
  • Versatilely and successfully present technical findings dependent on audiences.
  • Develop or implement test methodologies, as needed.
  • Mentor and train technicians, as needed.
  • Collaborate with, and provide technical support to other business units, as needed.
  • Adhere to all safety, health, and environmental policies.
  • Lead or participate in initiatives to continuously improve site-wide safety & operational efficiencies.
  • Assist in any additional assignments provided by the Technical Director, or other authorized employee. 


Qualifications

  • Research and Development (R&D) and Laboratory Skills
  • Experience in Chemistry and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in experiments
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • 10+ years of experience formulating industrial coatings
  • Proficient in Microsoft Applications
  • Familiarity with BME or other formulation software
  • Demonstrate strong planning and organizational skills to balance multiple projects
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time to industry-related conferences and customer sites
