Job Description
STS Packaging , a Schwarz Partners, L.P. Joint Venture company is currently seeking a Shift Supervisor in Charlotte, NC. The Shift Supervisor reports to the Production Superintendent and provides oversight and leadership to the operation and ensures the timely production of quality products that meet or exceed customer expectations. This position manages, plans and directs the operations of the department in a safe, hazard free work environment, while managing personnel, quality and production procedures, achieving total customer satisfaction in a cost-effective manner, with continuous support to the Production Superintendent.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS FOR THIS POSITION
  • Direct and support machine operators throughout shift to achieve production goals in both bag production, material handling, and printing areas; maintain quality throughout production day.
  • Adhere to production schedule: make recommendations for optimizing the schedule to meet cost, quality, delivery and service goals
  • Responsible for production team productivity throughout shift, including assigning all breaks and assigning other tasks such as cleaning, repacking, hold product inspection/sorting, etc. during line downtime events.
  • Communicates production targets and product specifications to production teams.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of production equipment operation.
  • Responsible for administering HR-related policies to team members in conjunction with the HR Manager, inclusive of attendance, time off requests, and other related items.
  • Maintains accurate time reporting at the end of each shift for accurate and timely payroll administration.
  • Responsible for the shift mechanics on shift and their work in conjunction with the Maintenance Manager.
  • Generates work orders for machines and plant repairs.
  • Trains team on required paperwork, and ensures all inventory, scrap, etc. are logged accurately daily and on time.
  • Enters/codes downtime and navigates line dashboard with ability to explain it to production team.
  • Trains operators on webbing machine, glue tolerances and machine settings, operation, and maintenance.
  • Ensures required material supplies (belly wrap, glue, shrink wrap, etc.) at the lines and directs material handlers as needed based on priorities.
  • Ensure 5S standards are followed according to visual aids in the department, and that machines are cleaned appropriately.
  • Prioritizes repairs on equipment to optimize production flow and any issue impacting productivity.
  • Promotes and facilitates the personal development of team members by identifying the need for training and providing training.
  • Responsible for training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Other duties related to day-to-day issues that may arise, as assigned by the Production Superintendent and/or Plant Manager
  • Works on the production lines whenever unexpected absenteeism occurs, or when needed to meet Customer needs.
  • Ability to work over as required by business needs.
OTHER SIGNIFICANT JOB FUNCTIONS INCLUDE
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area and reports unsafe conditions to management for resolution.
  • Adhere to all safety policies, including always wearing required PPE, and sets an example to others for model safety behavior.
  • Make informed decisions on quality defects and trains production team on common quality defects, including how to detect as well as what to do if observed.
  • Report any major quality or food safety issues to Supervisor.
  • Conform to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP's), and Safe Quality Food (SQF) procedures and policies to assure products are suitable for food contact.
  • Responsible for reporting any product quality or food safety issues to the Quality Manager (SQF Practitioner) or Management Team member.
  • Participate in and lead process improvement projects.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / CERTIFICATIONS
  • High School diploma or GED
  • 2 years' experience operating finishing equipment
  • Supervisory experience leading teams
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
PREFERRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
  • College/Trade School degree in manufacturing
  • 5 years' manufacturing experience in printing and packaging industry
REQUIRED SKILLS (TECHNICAL, CLERICAL, LANGUAGE, ETC.)
  • Self-driven
  • Experience in building successful teams
  • Knowledge of how to perform basic quality checks
  • Fluent in production terminology
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to teach, train and perform
  • Strong work ethic
  • Basic understanding of OEE and how it is used to measure machine overall performance
  • Work in accordance with all company policies and procedures
  • Willingness to work overtime when needed
LANGUAGE SKILLS
  • Fluency in English required
  • Fluency in Spanish a plus
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Constant standing, walking, talking, hearing; occasional sitting; specific vision abilities include close vision, color vision, distance vision, depth perception and peripheral vision. The position also requires the ability to stand 90% of shift and lift up to 45 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be available.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Standard plant environment: plants can be hot, noisy, exhibit vibrations, have uneven surfaces, mechanical hazards, dust/dirt, odor/fumes; work performed iside.
