Job Description

The System Chief of Emergency Medicine is a professional physician responsible for the clinical operations management and development of the high-performance emergency medicine service line at Bayhealth. The selected physician will manage all operational and administrative aspects of the existing four emergency sites (Kent campus, Sussex campus, Total Care, and FSED in Smyrna, as well as the Clinical Observation Unit at Kent campus including the financial, business, and personnel aspects. This physician leader will provide direct supervision and support for the medical director/assistant medical director team in all day-to-day operations and growth. Additionally, the incumbent will work closely with system executives, hospital administrators and colleague physicians in order to ensure proper alignment with the strategic goals of the system. This role is comprised of 60% administration/40% clinical duties as assigned.

Responsibilities:

1. Provide leadership and direction to the emergency medicine departments, managing a team of medical directors for each site.
2. Oversee the coordination and quality of emergency care throughout the health system.
3. Develop, implement, and evaluate policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of emergency services throughout the health system for the communities served.
4. Collaborate with Bayhealth’s other medical and professional staff to promote teamwork and ensure a seamless patient care experience.
5. Participate in strategic planning and development for emergency services, offering insights and recommendations based on emerging trends in healthcare and emergency medicine.
6. Maintain a working knowledge of relevant medical/legal/regulatory issues that impact patient care and emergency services.
7. Foster a culture of continuous quality improvement/high reliability and patient-centered care within the service line.
8. Actively participate in professional development and training for emergency department staff.
9. Serve as a mentor and role model to medical directors, residents, providers, and staff.
10. All other duties as assigned within scope and range of job responsibilities.

Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience:

  • Education: DO or MD required.
  • Credential(s): Board Certified in Emergency Medicine
  • Experience: 

    Required:  Six (6) years management experience in physician healthcare administration.  Experience in multi-site leadership/systems orientation. Demonstrated experience in strategic planning and project management within a healthcare setting.

    Preferred: 8+ years of leadership experience. Working with residents a plus - we have an Emergency Medicine Residency program.
