Director of Laboratory Services
Position Description:
The Director of Laboratory Services is a healthcare professional responsible for the overall management and operation of a clinical laboratory, overseeing all aspects of testing, staff, quality assurance, compliance with regulations, and ensuring accurate and timely results are delivered, while collaborating with clinicians to interpret test findings and guide patient care; essentially acting as the leader and decision-maker for all laboratory operations within a healthcare facility.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
All laboratory staff in multiple locations
Duties/Responsibilities:
Manages and directs the departments administrative and financial functions.
Prepares and is accountable for departmental operating budgets and the capital budget.
Evaluates personnel in accordance with performance standards in chemistry, microbiology, hematology, serology, and blood bank.
Responsible for administrative direction: interviewing, hiring, orienting, in-services, performance evaluations and termination of employment.
Addresses complaints regarding Clinical Laboratory functions and work with staff to resolve the complaints.
Designs lab requisitions and coordinates improvements in Clinical Laboratory reporting systems; serves as liaison with Information Management Services as it pertains to Clinical Laboratory.
Attends and participates in administrative and other meetings, as appropriate.
Maintains established hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and objectives; maintains the departments continuous quality improvement, safety, environmental and infection control, and compliance with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies.
Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies; develops an inventory system; oversees cost control measures in the utilization of department supplies, materials, equipment, and personnel.
Is responsible for the preparation of reports, payroll records and other statistical data as required.
Establishes and monitors criteria for the immediate notification of the practitioner responsible for the patient, when critical limits of specified test results are exceeded; implements corrective actions as required.
Remains accessible to the Clinical Laboratory staff for consultation as needed.
Maintains contact with providers to solicit appropriate input; identified problems are addressed in a timely manner.
Resolves personnel concerns at the departmental level, utilizing the grievance process as required.
Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire, safety, and infection control.
Effectively and consistently communicates administrative directive to personnel and encourages interactive departmental meetings and discussions.
Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
Completes Continuing Education (CEU) requirements as per ND Board of Clinical Laboratory Practice.
Completes annual educational requirement (Fire/Safety, HIPAA, Abuse, Compliance, etc.)
Communicates the mission, ethics, and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus of the department.
Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:
Physically capable of regularly bending, lifting, and carrying.
Ability to lift a minimum of 10 lbs.
Must be able to lift heavy objects, loading and unloading to and from vehicle, into building and sorting.
Required Skills/Abilities:
Extensive experience in clinical laboratory operations and management.
Strong understanding of laboratory regulations and quality assurance principles.
Excellent communication and leadership skills to effectively manage staff and collaborate with healthcare providers.
Basic computer knowledge.
Must be able to pass a background check and drug screening.
Education/Experience:
Minimum of Masters Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or Clinical Laboratory Science; Bachelors may be accepted with experience that aligns with federal regulations.
Minimum five (5) years experience in a supervisory position in healthcare.
Meets CLIA regulatory standard for General Supervisor.
Minimum of two years managerial experience in high complexity testing (in non-waived testing).
Experience with regulatory and accreditation of laboratory operations.
Licenses/Certifications:
Current Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Science licensure in the State of North Dakota.
