SMX is looking to appoint a
Senior Manager, Architecture and Engineering, who will lead our teams of engineers and architects in delivering high-quality technical and compliant solutions. This is a remote role but candidates in the National Capital Region are preferred.
This leadership role is central in steering our clients through the complexities of the cloud landscape, emphasizing meeting the stringent security requirements necessary for managing controlled unclassified information (CUI) in accordance with Department of Defense (DoD) and FedRAMP guidelines.
The Senior Manager, Architecture and Engineering will manage and mentor a team of technical experts while actively contributing to the design and implementation of solutions in regulated industries. This role requires a combination of deep technical knowledge in cloud computing and cybersecurity, strategic leadership, and a commitment to innovative, client-focused problem-solving. Candidates should demonstrate extensive experience with DoD Cloud Computing Security Requirements Guide (SRG) policies and FedRAMP, and a proven track record in leading teams to design and implement secure, resilient, and compliant cloud architectures.
This position involves direct collaboration with clients to support their strategic objectives and ensure their operations are empowered by secure, efficient, and compliant cloud solutions. This is a pivotal role for a proactive leader who is keen to drive teams, innovate processes, and set industry benchmarks in a fast-evolving technological space.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:- Oversee daily operations of technical teams, ensuring efficient and effective technical outcomes. Support Project Managers on directing team activities, prioritizing tasks, and allocating resources to optimize productivity and ensure that technical outcomes meet both project specifications and security requirements.
- Foster a collaborative environment where information is openly shared and team members are empowered to take initiative in problem-solving and innovation.
- Develop and enforce strategies to ensure cloud environments meet or exceed the security requirements of Impact Level 4 5 (IL45), focusing on the protection of controlled unclassified information (CUI) in compliance with Department of Defense (DoD) guidelines. This includes integrating secure cloud computing architectures that leverage encryption, IAM, and network security technologies.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on the integration of advanced cloud technologies and services within IL45 and FedRAMP environments, advising on best practices for secure cloud migration and deployment. Ensure the secure cloud computing architecture principles are applied consistently across all cloud initiatives.
- Collaborate with engineering and development teams to incorporate secure SDLC practices and secure cloud computing architecture standards in the design and development of applications within IL5 cloud environments.
- Participate in strategic planning sessions with senior management to align cloud strategies with organizational goals, emphasizing the importance of IL5 compliance and secure cloud computing architecture in supporting government and defense-related projects.
- Guide and mentor junior architects and engineers in the complexities of designing and operating within IL5 compliant cloud environments and secure cloud architecture, fostering a culture of security awareness and compliance throughout the organization.
- Implement efficiency improvements and automation in technical processes, focusing on enhancing security and compliance through secure cloud computing practices.
Required Skills and Experience:- Clearance Required: None
- A technical degree and 20+ years of experience in technology
- An additional 10 years of experience in lieu of a degree
- Experience in leading a team of technical resources
- Proven experience in managing technical outcomes for multi-disciplined teams
- Demonstrated mastery of Cloud Services and technology
- Proficiency in cybersecurity principles, cloud security best practices, and compliance standards relevant to IL5, such as the DoD Cloud Computing Security Requirements Guide (SRG), NIST frameworks, and FedRAMP
- Deep understanding of SCCA
- Deep understanding of the DoD's Impact Level standards, particularly IL5, and the specific security controls and processes required for compliance
- Experience in preparing for audits, documenting compliance with security standards, and developing security policies and procedures
- Capability to deconstruct technical architecture into tasks and plans
- Experience writing comprehensive Statements of Work and Proposals
- Exceptional customer interaction skills and professionalism
- A strong desire to contribute to the overall growth and scale of the organization by contributing to the sales process, interviewing technical candidates, and developing deep customer relationships
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex cloud and security concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Customer-focused attitude
- Direct experience in architecting/designing environments for IL5 or similar high-security settings
- Proven track record of successfully leading complex projects in regulated industries or government sectors, demonstrating an ability to meet strict security and compliance requirements
Desired Qualifications:- Experience in agile environments and familiarity with Scrum
- Proficiency with CI/CD tools and container management tools
- Experience with container technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) for developing, deploying, and managing containerized applications in IL5 environments
- BS/BA in Computer Science/Engineering or a related domain
- Over 7 years of hands-on AWS
- AWS Solution Architect Professional or related certifications
- Ability to travel up to 25%
