The OpportunitySPUR is seeking a strategic and dynamic Director of Institutional Giving to enhance our corporate and foundation giving program to advance SPUR's mission. The director will serve as a key leadership position within SPUR's development team and is responsible for generating approximately $3M in revenue from businesses and foundations through memberships, event sponsorships, and special grants. They will drive strategy, cultivate long-term relationships, design and oversee business membership campaigns, oversee cultivation and stewardship events, and refine critical fundraising systems for SPUR's business membership programs. The position oversees one full-time Corporate Relations Manager.
The Director of Institutional Giving portfolio of donors is primarily focused on Board Member companies and the largest corporate donor accounts.
Essential FunctionsCultivation/Fundraising
- Develop strong relationships with a portfolio of business members and prospects.
- Build partnerships with SPUR's Board and City Advisory Boards to engage them in corporate fundraising activities.
- Steward, renew, and upgrade current business members.
- Recruit new business members.
- Secure corporate sponsorships for the Silver SPUR and Ideas + Action annual events; as well as other events including but not limited to Business Events and Public Programs.
- Identify opportunities for special grants from companies that align with SPUR's priorities.
- Grow, manage, and engage donors via Corporate Affinity Groups, including the SPUR Urban Infrastructure Council and SPUR Planning and Architecture Council.
- Maintain a strong knowledge of SPUR policy and advocacy programs.
Strategic Planning
- With guidance from the CDO, develop the long-term strategy for nurturing and growing SPUR's corporate donor base.
- In partnership with the CDO, develop annual revenue goals for business membership and signature event sponsorship.
- In partnership with the Engagement team, ideate content for business-related engagement events.
- Coordinate closely with the Engagement team and Affinity Group co-chairs to ideate and coordinate Affinity Group programming.
- Engage in continuous learning and improvement with SPUR's fundraising efforts so that they become more effective over time
Team Leadership
- Oversee the Corporate Relations Manager to ensure alignment of SPUR's business development strategic plan.
- Collaborate with SPUR's Board, City Advisory Board, Senior Leadership, and Policy Staff to cultivate, solicit, and steward corporate & foundation donors.
- Works collaboratively and strategically with other development staff to coordinate strategy, tactics, and process
- Oversight of the corporate donor stewardship management process, ensuring all pledges are captured in the CRM database and that donors are empowered to fulfill their commitments
- Maintain, optimize, and refine the constituent record management system, Salesforce, to enhance fundraising effectiveness and efficiency.
- Partner with the finance associate to ensure accurate invoicing and timely payment of pledges.
- Frequently attends SPUR events and meetings outside of normal business hours.
Administrative responsibilities
- Oversight of the corporate donor stewardship management process, ensuring all moves management stages are captured in the CRM database and that donors are empowered to fulfill their pledge commitments.
- Optimize and refine Salesforce to enhance corporate fundraising effectiveness and efficiency.
- Oversee the creation and integrity of corporate accounting dashboards through Salesforce and other tracking tools
- Ensure corporate contributions are allocated directly
- Partner with the communications and marketing to develop marketing materials and email marketing campaigns for signature events
Key Qualifications - Proven track record of successfully identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding a diverse portfolio of corporate and foundation donors.
- Ability to build public support and enthusiasm for SPUR.
- Demonstrated success in developing and implementing fundraising strategies and achieving revenue goals.
- Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Knowledge of strategy and evaluation; goal setting and evaluation; and budget development, and management.
- Acts like an owner; constantly looks for improvement opportunities
- Coaching people and teams / inspiring high performance.
- Expert in Salesforce or similar constituent relations management database with a proven ability to navigate and strategically utilize donor and membership databases, CRM systems, and complimentary fundraising platforms.

- Strong collaboration skills and ability to work well across departments.
- Exceptional oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

- Ability to attend events in the mornings or evenings throughout the Bay Area at least once a weekAbility to be at the SPUR Urban Center in San Francisco 2-3 times a week and other SPUR offices as needed.
- A passion for cities, public policy, and the Bay Area with knowledge of local and regional giving trends.
BenefitsThe salary range for this position is $125,000-$143,000 and will be based on experience and commensurate with skills and qualifications. This is a full-time, exempt position. SPUR offers a generous and comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, dental insurance, vision care, basic life insurance, pre-tax commuter benefits, work from home stipend, employee assistance program (EAP), 6 months of paid maternity & paternity leave and retirement plan with twenty-five percent contribution matching.
Hybrid Work EnvironmentAt SPUR the health of our employees and their families is our top priority. SPUR has a hybrid workplace model defined by a combination of remote and in-person work. We have mandatory all-staff in-person days on Monday and Wednesday, and staff will be required to attend other in-person meetings, events, and programs around the Bay Area region as needed.
