Job Description
The Cleveland Museum of Art is seeking a Director of Institutional Giving who will be responsible for securing support from foundations, government and potentially corporate sources for a variety of museum initiatives and programs as well as stewardship of supporters and administration of active grants. Understanding the museum's strategic priorities is crucial to this role, which will help develop and implement a strategy for securing funding from Institutional donors, for projects that align with the museum's strategic priorities.

Requirements and Key Competencies

  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university; with a minimum of five years successful fundraising experience with prior success in securing foundation and government grants. Experience soliciting corporations and corporate foundations helpful.
  • Ability to write persuasive funding request proposals along with routine reports and correspondence efficiently. Experience creating grant application budgets and other related financial reports.


Responsibilities

  • As part of the Institutional Relations team, contributes to the development and implementation of annual fundraising plans to secure support from a variety of institutional sources for appropriate museum initiatives and programs, including but not limited to: operating support, exhibitions, education and public programs, special initiatives and capital projects. Develops strategies for approaches to institutional source through communication and developing relationships with their program staff; Knowledge of the over-arching foundation and government landscape, of funding priorities and practices at individual foundations and government agencies, and of their relevance for the museum. Manages a portfolio of institutional funders as assigned.
  • Prepares and submits proposals-including project narratives, budgets and supporting materials-to funders, ensuring that proposals represent the museum as strongly as possible, even as they also meet the criteria articulated by the funder.
  • Identifies and qualifies new prospects for institutional funding. Determines and implements cultivation and solicitation plans that align with other department prospects. Prepares and maintains a database of prospects, funding sources, and proposals submitted; upholds the museum's commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion in seeking funding opportunities from diverse financing sources.
  • Under the direction of the Director of Institutional Relations, and in collaboration with curatorial and programmatic staff, develops and prepares grant applications, oversees their submission and related follow-through, including communication with funder program officers as appropriate. He/she may take the lead on major projects and initiatives that involve grant proposals to government agencies, including, but not limited to the NEA, NEH and IMLS. Develops and sustains relationships with museum staff, with the aim of understanding the range of work at the museum, where support is needed, and how best to match needs with funding opportunities.
  • Oversees the administration of active major grants. Includes accurately tracking information on grant periods; reporting deadlines and funder information; preparing reports; communicating with funders regarding pending and current grants; fielding staff inquiries about current projects; and educating staff about terms and requirements of grants. Prepares and submits written interim and final reports on all grant activities to ensure that the museum has been responsible in disbursement of funds according to the grant's criteria and that the activities undertaken have met each foundation's accountability criteria.
  • Works with CMA departments to acquire and compile data for reports. Prepares interim and final stewardship reports as needed.
  • Assists the Director of Institutional Relations, in the planning of, and participation in, cultivation and stewardship activities and events as appropriate.
