The HR Generalist will have both tactical and strategic responsibilities related to recruiting and onboarding, employee relations, payroll and benefits, and compliance. The HR Generalist assists in the development, implementation, and administration of effective human resource policies, procedures and systems that support the objectives of our business partners and the overall organization. The HR Generalist will be a key participant in the development of short and long-term HR objectives consistent with organizational strategy.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Recruiting and Onboarding
- Work closely with the Recruiting Team to move employees through the hiring and onboarding process.
- Coordinate and conduct new employee orientations.
Employee Relations- Work in conjunction with leadership to create a company culture that emphasizes teamwork, safety, customer service, continuous improvement, and high performance.
- Maintain a positive environment through effective employee communication, and fair and consistent treatment of employees.
- Balance the role of company representative with that of employee advocate. Act as coach and confidant to employees.
- Assist employees and managers with conflict resolution. Conduct investigations and make sound fact-based decisions.
- Actively demonstrate Fortis values and encourage an open-door environment.
- Conduct exit interviews, analyze data to identify trends and make recommendations.
- May participates on local or company Employee Engagement Committees.
- Coordinate employee celebrations and meals.
Compensation & Benefits- Implement and administer benefits programs including open enrollment, life events, plan set up and maintenance.
- Provide input into benefit offerings and design including cost-sharing structure.
- Develop benefits communications and counsel employees on benefit-related issues.
- Evaluate existing benefits programs to determine competitiveness, trends and developments and recommend changes.
Compliance- Ensure compliance with all company and government regulatory standards in the areas of compensation, benefits, labor, affirmative action, employment law, diversity and all other Human Resource governance.
- Maintain accurate employee records in HRIS system and personnel files including I-9 retention.
- Provide advice, interpretation, and counsel to employees and managers on HR policy, programs, and practices.
- Respond to inquiries regarding policies, procedures, and programs.
- Actively participate in the development and implementation of Company policies and procedures applying knowledge of regulations and best practices.
- Prepare documentation as needed for investigations, appeals, and hearings, as needed. Cooperate with outside counsel on employment related issues if necessary.
- Manages employee leave of absence programs including assisting employees, recordkeeping, and compliance.
Other - Report Worker's Compensation injuries to carrier and liaise with claim adjusters and employee throughout claim and employee return to work, as needed.
- Ensure employees are returned to work in a safe and timely manager. Monitor restricted duty assignments.
- Mentor teammates in areas of expertise to continuously develop the knowledge and skill level of the HR team.
- Stay abreast of trends and changes in employment law and HR best practices to keep the company competitive and compliant with state and federal governmental agencies
Required Qualifications- High school diploma/GED and at least 7 years of progressive HR experience or
- An Associate's degree and at least 5 years of progressive HR experience or
- A Bachelor's degree and at least 3 years of progressive HR experience
- At least 2 years of experience working with an HRIS.
- Knowledge of federal and state laws related to employment and labor (FLSA, EEO, FMLA, ADA, etc.) regulations and compliance; broad understanding of HR principles and practices
- Strong verbal, written, and consultative communication skills.
- Ability to develop professional relationships and credibility within the organization.
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Team, Word, and PowerPoint. Intermediate proficiency in Excel (formulas, Vlookup, data management, formatting).
- Experience administering benefit programs.
- Capacity to apply discretion and maintain a high level of confidentiality when handling sensitive information.
Preferred Qualification- Bachelor's degree or higher in an HR or business-related field.
- More than 7 years of HR experience
- Experience working in the construction industry
- SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, HRCI SPHR or PHR certification
- Prior experience with prevailing wage
- Prior experience processing payroll
- Prior experience with ADP or UKG
Compensation Schedule $80,000 - $100,000/year
