Mechanical Engineer or Project Manager
Calgary, Alberta
Consulting Engineering Firm (Buildings)
$90k+ depending on experience

OUR CLIENT
An opportunity exists in our client’s Calgary office for a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer or Mechanical Project Manager to join a leading firm across Western Canada. This company has a well-established presence and a strong portfolio of work across a variety of sectors.

THE ROLE
In this role you will be responsible for managing the mechanical engineering on a variety of buildings projects ranging in size and complexity, with a focus on mixed use, institutional and commercial buildings.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Analyze client design proposals and specifications to determine cost effective solutions.
  2. Provide guidance to clients, technical staff and sub-consultants to ensure projects are technically sound and completed successfully.
  3. Coordinate with other disciplines internally as well as externally with consultants and architects.
  4. Ensure professional quality services in all facets of work.
  5. Provide quality and cost control during the design and construction process.
  6. Work with the project team to ensure technical accuracy of project deliverables.
  7. Manage project activities throughout lifecycle, including the allocation of adequate resources, documentation and other factors necessary for success.
  8. Prepare and review specification and concept reports.
  9. Maintain project schedules and project cost summaries to track work progress, budget status and manpower resource utilization.
  10. Identify and address the need for additional services and fees to clients in a timely fashion.
  11. Work with the field review team during the construction phase and ensure ASHRAE compliance and LEED where applicable.
  12. Keep apprised of industry and technical trends, codes, and standards.
  13. Contribute to the Design building HVAC, Plumbing and Fire Protection systems.
  14. Coordinate and be responsible for mechanical engineering designs, drawings and specifications.
  15. Collaborate with Architects and project teams to ensure design requirements are met and to solve design problems and technical issues.
  16. Nurture and maintain strong client relationships in and for execution of projects.
  17. Support specific proposal and project efforts.
  18. Conduct peer reviews of engineering calculations, drawings and specifications within the mechanical team.
  19. Assist in preparing detailed engineering design calculations.
  20. Assist junior staff.

WHAT’S REQUIRED

  1. Registered EIT or Engineer with APEGA.
  2. 8+ years of experience in Mechanical Engineering, with at least 2+ years of experience in Mechanical Engineering from within North America (Buildings Engineering experience essential).
  3. Knowledge working with Canadian building codes.
  4. Thorough understanding of mechanical engineering concepts and ability to communicate ideas to others.
  5. Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, means and methods, materials, and industry standards.
  6. Knowledge of and experience with high performance and sustainable building practices an asset.
  7. Excellent knowledge of national and provincial building codes and standards.
  8. Working understanding of and familiarity with AutoCAD. Exposure to BIM and Revit will be an asset, so as to be able to review drawings.
  9. Good organization, coordination, and project management skills to maintain project schedules and budgets.
  10. Good verbal communication and soft skills - able to work effectively with clients, teams and consultants.
  11. Able to work in a fast-paced environment on multiple projects simultaneously.
  12. Oil & Gas / Heavy Industrial experience will not be considered equivalent for this role.
