Job Description
STATEMENT OF JOB:
The Medication Aide (West Virginia: AMAP -- Approved Medication Assistant Personnel) provides quality care and assistance with activities of daily living for residents of the community as well as assists with the administration of prescribed medications within the established scope of practice. The Medication Aide (or AMAP) encourages all residents to function at their highest level of independence and to participate in community activities. Conducts activities and provides for a meaningful experience for all residents. Responsible for ensuring a pleasurable dining experience and for representing the community in a positive manner at all times.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Assists with the administration of prescribed medications within the established scope of practice.
  • Must maintain a working knowledge of all policies and procedures pertaining to the position
  • Assists residents with activities of daily living
  • Reports incidents involving residents to include care concerns or issues, to appropriate individuals (ex: HCC, RN/LPN, or ED)
  • Perform housekeeping duties, such as making resident beds, cleaning resident apartments, common areas, dining room, etc. as directed by supervisor
  • Respond promptly to all resident calls for assistance or emergency alerts
  • Assists in planning and conducting activity programs for residents
  • Follows confidentiality policies regarding release of resident information
  • Assists residents to and from the dining room, and to and from activities
  • Checks on residents, ensures attendance at meals and activities
  • Checks on residents who are ill and reports status or concerns to appropriate individuals
  • Communicate verbally and in writing to report resident status, upcoming community information, resident appointments, admissions, and transfers
  • Assists new residents with move-in transition: provide emotional support
  • Attendance to all medication trainings scheduled
  • Complete medication cart audits as assigned and maintain the medication cart as directed
  • Pass all medication administration observations
  • Communicates all medication resident needs to the HCC and documents in the Daily Log
  • Re-orders medications, faxes to pharmacy, communicates with resident family/RP as needed with changes. Reports in Daily Log
  • Documents all medication administration on the EMAR/MAR. Reports all exceptions to the HCC and documented on EMAR and Daily Log.
  • Completes all other duties as assigned.
West Virginia AMAP only: Assists with administration of medications within the established scope of practice. AMAP direct supervisor regarding all medication practices is the RN. All new medications or medication changes must be reviewed with the RN before administration.
Requirement
(REVIEW AND SELECT APPROPRIATE REQUIREMENTS ACCORDING TO STATE)
Requirements for North Carolina:
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED
  • Must have successfully passed the written examination and possess a current Medication Aide Certification, in good standing, per verification of listing-North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation/Adult Care Licensure Section
  • Must have worked as a medication aide during the previous 24 months in an adult care home as verified on the Facility Medication Aide Verification form, DSHR/AC 4664
  • Must have successfully completed the clinical skills validation portion of the competency evaluation prior to administration or supervision of administration of medication as documented on the NC Medication Administration Skills Validation Form, DHSR/AC 4605
  • Shall complete 6 hours annually of in-service training that shall include but not be limited to safe practices for injections and any other procedures during which bleeding typically occurs, glucose monitoring, and 3 hours of the state specific infection control training
  • Must satisfactorily pass 2 medication observations annually
  • Must satisfactorily pass all medication cart audits assigned
  • Must be able to effectively communicate verbally and in-writing
  • Must be organized and able to work well with all levels of personnel
  • Must be a contributing member of nursing team and follow instruction of supervisor
  • Must be polite and considerate of residents, visitors, and co-workers at all times
  • Must be able to walk and stand for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs, and push or carry 25 lbs
  • Must be able to safely lift and transfer residents while maintaining proper body mechanics
  • Must be in designated uniform during working hours, to include name badge and a smile
  • Must be CPR/First Aid certified, or be willing to become certified within 60 days of hire
  • Must be able to represent the community in a positive and professional manner
  • Must attend and complete all required in-services and staff meetings
  • Must be able to remain calm and competent during emergencies
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule that includes weekends and holidays

Requirements for Pennsylvania:
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED
  • Medications may be administered by Community home staff persons who have completed the medication administration training as specified in PA 55 ยง 2600.190
    • Successful completion of a Department-approved medications administration course that includes the passing of the Department's performance-based competency test within the past 2 years may administer oral; topoical; eye, nose, and ear drop prescription medications and epinephrine injections for insect bites or other allergies.
    • Will be permitted to administer insulin injections upon successful completion of a Department-approved medications administration course that includes the passing of a written performance-based compentency test within the past 2 years, as well as successful completion of a Department-approved diabetes patient education program withing the past 12 months.
    • Must have a record of the training including the staff person trained, the date, source, name of trainer and documentation that the course was successfully completed.

Requirements for West Virginia:
  • Must possess both current CNA and AMAP certification in the state of West Virginia
  • Must satisfactorily pass medication observations annually
  • Must satisfactorily pass all medication cart audits assigned
  • Must be able to effectively communicate verbally and in-writing
  • Must be organized and able to work well with all levels of personnel
  • Must participate in a retraining program from delegating RN(s) every two (2) years
  • Must be a contributing member of nursing team and follow instruction of supervisor
  • Must be polite and considerate of residents, visitors, and co-workers at all times
  • Must be able to walk and stand for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs, and push or carry 25 lbs
  • Must be able to safely lift and transfer residents while maintaining proper body mechanics
  • Must be in designated uniform during working hours, to include name badge and a smile
  • Must be CPR/First Aid certified, or be willing to become certified within 60 days of hire
  • Must be able to represent the community in a positive and professional manner
