Primary Purpose: The Transportation Lead Driver under the direct supervision of a transportation supervisor will assist with daily operations as well as drive an assigned regular route. This position will collaborate with the supervisors to oversee daily operations of the Transportation Department as it pertains to bus drivers and bus monitors.
Qualifications: Education/Certification: - Must be 21 years of age.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- One-year experience as a school bus driver (preferred).
- Possess a class B commercial driver's license with "S" and "P" endorsements that meets District requirements.
- Must register through the Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration
- Ability to pass a criminal background check, pre-employment physical examination.
- Ability to follow verbal instructions.
- Ability to operate safety/adaptive equipment and work with children with disabilities.
Major Responsibilities and Duties: - Exhibit a positive attitude and serve as a role model for students, colleagues, and the community.
- Respond positively to supervision, suggestions and/or directives. Use feedback for improvement of performance.
- Act in an ethical and honest manner including maintaining confidentiality as necessary.
- Effectively communicate with colleagues, students, and parents.
- Assist transportation supervisors in overseeing daily transportation operations.
- Verify bus driver pre-trip and post-trip sheets.
- Serve on field trips only in a capacity as a lead driver. The field trips must consist of four or more buses.
- Ensure department policies and procedures are followed during field trips.
- Evaluate bus stops as necessary to ensure consistency with our services and safety parameters.
- Periodically check interior of buses and provide feedback to drivers and/or supervisors.
- Periodically check route books including sheets, kinder forms, and any other paperwork needed.
- Collaborate with safety trainer and supervisors in order to develop and maintain training schedule.
- Collaborate with safety trainer and supervisors to organize and perform bus evacuation drills.
- Assist supervisors with the student discipline referral process.
- In charge of disseminating adequate information to team members as required by the director and/or supervisor.
- Serve as a mentor to new employees.
- Serve as the first point of contact between drivers/monitors and supervisor or director.
- Periodically check bus drivers licensing documentation.
- Drive an assigned regular route.
- Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Duties: Foster a positive work environment.
Monitor and report to supervisor the work of assigned bus drivers and bus monitors as necessary.
Working Conditions: Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control under stress. Prolonged sitting; frequent standing and twisting; occasional kneeling/squatting, bending, stooping, and pushing/pulling. Prolonged driving; moderate walking; frequent climbing stairs, grasping/squeezing, wrist and should flexion/extension, and reaching; limited light; ability to communicate effectively with students, parents and staff; ability to maintain effective control over groups of students and co-workers; ability to deal with challenging situations as well as life threatening emergencies.
