Job Summary:

The Material Handler is responsible for ensuring the efficient and timely movement, storage, and distribution of medical supplies, equipment, and materials throughout the hospital. The role involves receiving, stocking, picking, and delivering supplies to different hospital departments while maintaining accurate inventory records. This position plays a vital role in supporting patient care by ensuring medical teams have access to the supplies and materials they need for daily operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Receiving and Inspection: Unload and inspect incoming shipments of medical supplies and equipment, verifying quantities and conditions against purchase orders and packing slips.
  • Inventory Management: Organize and stock inventory in designated areas, maintaining optimal stock levels and performing regular cycle counts to ensure accuracy.
  • Supply Distribution: Pick and deliver medical supplies and equipment to various hospital departments, ensuring timely and accurate distribution based on requisitions or predetermined par levels.
  • Stock Replenishment: Monitor stock levels in department supply rooms and replenish as needed, ensuring that all units have sufficient medical supplies for daily operations.
  • Equipment Handling: Safely operate material handling equipment such as pallet jacks, carts, and forklifts (if certified) to move heavy or bulk items as necessary.
  • Data Entry and Record-Keeping: Update inventory management systems with accurate data regarding inventory levels, stock movements, and discrepancies.
  • Communication and Coordination: Collaborate with nursing and other hospital staff to fulfill urgent supply requests, troubleshoot supply issues, and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Compliance: Follow hospital safety policies and infection control protocols to ensure a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Waste Management: Assist with the disposal or return of expired, damaged, or surplus supplies following hospital guidelines and regulations.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: Previous experience as a material handler, stock clerk, or warehouse worker, preferably in a healthcare or hospital setting.
  • Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy materials (up to 50 lbs) and stand for long periods.
  • Familiarity with inventory management systems (experience with ERP systems is a plus).
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Excel, Word).
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and physically demanding environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly required to lift, push, or pull supplies and equipment.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and perform repetitive movements for extended periods.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and reach in various areas of the hospital.

Work Environment:

  • This role involves working in both climate-controlled and non-climate-controlled environments, including storerooms and loading docks.
  • May require interaction with patients, hospital staff, and external vendors.
