The Legal Counsel provides legal services to assist the General Counsel & Privacy Officer in supporting the company’s strategic initiatives, objectives and direction. This position provides legal services to internal stakeholders and supports the General Counsel and Senior Leadership Team on a broad spectrum of business and legal issues as well as supporting the company’s privacy and data protection program.
Reporting directly to the General Counsel & Privacy Officer, the Legal Counsel is based at the company’s head office in Moncton, New Brunswick.
How you will make an impact
Contracting:
Provide support in contract negotiations and/or negotiate contracts on behalf of the company with vendors, partners, and other institutions.
Draft and review contracts, including Master Service Agreements, Statements of Work, Leases, Mergers and Acquisition documents, while prioritizing legal compliance, maximizing value and minimizing risk.
Privacy:
Support the improvement and implementation of comprehensive privacy programs to ensure compliance with applicable data protection laws and regulations.
Provide legal advice and support on privacy matters, including conducting privacy impact assessments and managing data breach responses.
General Legal:
Provide legal advice and support to various business units on a wide range of areas of law, including but not limited to data protection and privacy, corporate and commercial, regulatory compliance and employment.
Conduct legal research in relation to applicable legislation, regulation and industry standards at a national level to support company compliance and support best practices.
Assist with the development of the company’s policies to align with regulatory requirements and internal strategic direction.
Contribute to the business’ objectives and strategies as an advisor, problem-solver, and strategic thinker.
Develop strong, collaborative cross-functional relationships that support business units and key business partners.
What you’ll bring to our team
L.B. or J.D. and membership in good standing with the Law Society of New Brunswick.
Five (5) or more years of experience practicing law is required.
Experience in one or more of the following areas will be considered an asset: Corporate & Commercial, Contracting, Health, Risk Management, Employment, Privacy.
In-house experience is an asset.
Excellent researching, drafting and negotiating skills, with keen attention to detail.
Experience practicing law in other provinces is an asset.
A collaborative, solutions-oriented approach and strong communication skills.
Fluency in both English and French is an asset.
