Job OverviewThe Custodian Lead Middle School will oversee the supervision, plans, assignments and review the work of the custodial staff while performing moderate to heavy cleaning and custodial task. This incumbent will be responsible for planning, scheduling, assigning, supervising and coordinating all cleaning and custodial activities at the assigned location.Position DescriptionEssential Duties and ResponsibilitiesAdministrative and Leadership Plan, schedule, assign, coordinate, and supervise the work of a moderate-sized group of custodial employees engaged in various cleaning and custodial activitiesCoordinate, supervise and assist in set up furniture for school and facility rentalsTrain custodial staff in proper work methods and procedures, proper use of equipment, materials and supplies, and on expected levels of performanceAssign equipment, materials and supplies; order and maintain an inventory of cleaning materials and suppliesKeep records and prepare reports of work accomplished and materials usedMeet and confer with school personnel regarding custodian activitiesPlan and conduct safety meetings ensuring all employees are informed and trained properlySafety and Inspection Conduct daily inspections of the building and grounds for cleanliness and security purposesLock and secure building; check and activate the fire alarm systemEnsure that all safety and security precautions are followed, that equipment and materials are utilized properly, and that established work standards are maintainedReport any damage, vandalism or unsafe condition to proper authoritiesCheck expiration dates on fire extinguishers and report to appropriate personnel for maintenanceOperational Perform various custodial flooring task, sanitizing and dusting as well as common area cleaning alongside custodial staffPerform and supervise in the operation of custodial equipment such as mops, 2-speed and high speed buffers, wet/dry vacuum cleaners, shampoo machines, water and carpet extractors, carpet blowers, spotters and ride/walk behind automatic floor scrubberUtilize Kaivac restroom cleaning machine, chair dolly, computers, washer and dryer, pressure washer, two-way communication device, and other various janitorial equipmentMaintain grounds around buildings, pick-up paper, cans, trash and debris; clean sidewalks, driveways and parking lots and play areasOn a regular basis patrol, monitor and clean areas of the assigned school, building or facility while performing walk through using established procedures for locking, checking and safeguarding facility, including turning off lightsReport any maintenance problems and/or unauthorized people in buildingAssist with minor repairs such as replace pencil sharpeners, adjusting desks, open students lockers, open/close valves, etc.Supervisory Responsibilities Supervise one or more employeesReport on employees' work hours and performance; schedules and approve leave timeCoach and counsel employees and resolve complaints; initiate disciplinary actions if neededHold regular meetings keeping staff informedCreate and assign work area locations and daily assignmentsProvide trainings and guidance concerning processes and procedures as well as appropriate equipment usageQualification RequirementsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the above essential duties satisfactorily. May work prolonged or irregular hours and must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.Additional Information Work requires sufficient physical strength, agility, dexterity, and hand-eye-foot coordination to perform all essential tasks, including operating custodian equipment, lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds, pushing and pulling equipment weighing up to 70 pounds, reaching in front of body and stretching overhead. Employee is exposed to potential chemical hazards and toxic substances when using cleaning liquids, solvents and solutions, to potential biological hazards when cleaning restrooms, and to potential physical hazards when operating custodian equipment. Work also exposes employee to dust, fumes and occasionally to adverse weather conditions. Work requires the frequent use of safety clothing and equipment and compliance with safety procedures. Usage of propane gas and battery operated equipment. Most positions require work during evening/night shifts.
