Director, Residential Mortgage Credit Risk Management
Overview
Our client, a leading financial institution in Toronto is seeking an experienced Director for the oversight of residential mortgage lending (RESL) activities, including quantitative portfolio analysis.
This individual will be responsible for approving policy exceptions and mortgage purchases within delegated lending authority, developing and maintaining credit risk-related policies, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
The Director will also focus on identifying emerging risks and implementing risk management practices to support the growth of the residential mortgage portfolio.
Core Responsibilities
RESL Approvals
- Approve exceptions to RESL policies and balance sheet mortgage purchases in line with delegated authority.
- Oversee the credit aspects of mortgage-related lines of credit, ensuring collateral eligibility.
- Policies and Guidelines
- Maintain RESL policies and ensure alignment with risk appetite, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
- Review and challenge first-line guidelines and procedures, providing recommendations to strengthen internal controls.
ECL, Arrears, and Default Management
- Participate in Expected Credit Loss (ECL) assessments and manage oversight of arrears and default processes.
- Monitor the portfolio for increased credit risk, ensuring robust management of arrears and defaults.
- Stress Testing
- Conduct sensitivity analysis and stress testing to gauge portfolio risk and implement proactive mitigation strategies.
- Support capital and contingency planning efforts through in-depth risk analysis.
Quality Assurance
Oversee quality assurance for residential mortgage underwriting, ensuring compliance with risk appetite and policy requirements.
Monitoring and Reporting
Perform ongoing monitoring of RESL risk limits and support accurate risk reporting on the portfolio, including emerging risks. - Stay informed on market conditions to assess potential impacts on the mortgage portfolio.
Regulatory and Compliance
Complete all compliance training and adhere to regulatory requirements, as well as internal risk and governance policies.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in RESL risk management within a regulated institution, with deep knowledge of mortgage lending.
- Strong understanding of regulatory requirements for RESL, including OSFI guidelines.
