Job Description

Patton State Hospital, Human Resources is accepting applications for at least one (1) Permanent, Full-time, Physician and Surgeon (Safety) position. The position is assigned to the Medical Services Department. The position is under the direct supervision of the Chief Physician and Surgeon.
As a Physician and Surgeon, incumbent is responsible for planning, directing, and performing all phases of the medical services provided at Patton State Hospital as applicable to his/her assigned patients, and for making professional decisions regarding general medical work and surgery, as well as for appropriate referrals for services not performed at Patton State Hospital, all within the scope of medical staff privileges and professional license. Physician and Surgeon is a rank-and-file position in the SE category.
Special Personal Characteristics:
Willingness to work at State hospitals; demonstrated leadership ability; sympathetic and objective understanding of the problems of mentally disordered offenders; tact; patience; and emotional stability.
Special Physical Characteristics:
Incumbents must possess and maintain enough strength, agility, and endurance to perform during physically, mentally, and emotionally stressful, emergency situations encountered on the job without endangering their own health and well-being or that of their fellow employees, forensic patients, or the public.
Minimum Qualifications:
Possession of the legal requirements for the practice of medicine in California as determined by the California Board of Medical Quality Assurance or the California Board of Osteopathic Examiners. (Applicants who are in the process of securing approval of their qualifications by the Board of Medical Quality Assurance or the Board of Osteopathic Examiners will be admitted to the examination, but the Board to which application is made must determine that all legal requirements have been met before candidates will be eligible for appointment.) and Completion of an internship in an approved hospital. (Applicants serving an internship will be admitted to the examination, but they may not be appointed until they meet the other requirements stated above.)
A drug screen must be passed prior to hiring.

Working Conditions
Patton is a forensic psychiatric hospital and was established in 1890 and opened in 1893. DSH-Patton provides treatment to forensically and civilly committed patients within a secure treatment area. The hospital does not accept voluntary admissions.

1. A State Application (STD 678) is REQUIRED and must be submitted.
