Position Overview
The Design, Drafting, and Detailing Manager will lead and oversee the design, drafting, and detailing functions for the structural steel company. This position requires expertise in structural steel detailing, proficiency with design software, and strong leadership skills to ensure the accurate and timely delivery of high-quality drawings and plans. The manager will collaborate closely with project teams, clients, and fabrication shops to achieve project goals and maintain industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership & Team Management
- Supervise and mentor a team of designers, drafters, and detailers, ensuring professional development and skill enhancement.
- Allocate workload and resources effectively to meet project deadlines and priorities.
- Foster a collaborative and innovative work environment focused on accuracy and efficiency.
- Drafting and Detailing Oversight
- Review and approve detailed drawings, shop drawings, and 3D models for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with project specifications and industry standards (AISC, AWS, etc.).
- Provide guidance on complex design and detailing challenges, ensuring solutions align with engineering requirements and fabrication constraints.
- Coordinate with engineers, project managers, and fabrication teams to resolve discrepancies and ensure constructability.
- Project Coordination
- Serve as the primary liaison between design teams, clients, and production teams to ensure alignment of objectives.
- Attend project meetings to discuss design progress, changes, and deadlines.
- Support bid preparation by reviewing plans and providing technical input.
- Process Improvement
- Develop and implement best practices, standards, and workflows for design and detailing processes.
- Stay updated on the latest software and technology advancements, recommending tools to enhance team productivity and accuracy.
- Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to improve team performance and project outcomes.
- Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Ensure all designs and details comply with relevant codes, standards, and client specifications.
- Conduct quality control reviews to identify and address errors before submission.
- Manage document control processes for all design-related files and drawings.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Drafting, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in structural steel detailing, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or management role.
- Proficiency in detailing software such as Tekla, SDS/2, or AutoCAD.
- Strong understanding of structural steel fabrication, erection, and connection design principles.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Building Information Modeling (BIM).
- Familiarity with steel material grades, welding specifications, and construction practices.
- Professional certifications (e.g., AISC Steel Detailer Certification or equivalent) are a plus.
