Role Overview
The Senior Structural Designer is responsible for designing, detailing, and engineering temporary and semi-permanent corrugated displays from prototype through to production. They have an excellent technical background and understanding in the material and the processes of building displays that focus on quality, assembly, stability, functionality, production efficiencies and budget.
This role is primarily on-site, with some flexibility at our Scarborough location.
A Closer Look at What You’ll Do
Ideation:
- Design concepts and specifications for temporary and semi-permanent, corrugate displays based on 3D rendered designs driven by customer deliverable requirements
- Specification development and ideation through Computer Aided Design (“CAD”) tools Concept development and ideation of concepts through sketch, 3D models and renders
Communication and Compliance:
- Review design requests to ensure comprehension and completeness of information provided in order to execute on requested deliverables and achieve the deliverable objectives
- Work timely and diligently with internal teams to comprehend and / or clarify customer or project requirements
- Manage and execute on multiple programs/projects and multiple projects deadlines
- Keeps project teams up to date, as necessary, with respect to key project milestones, issues and/ or challenges
- Effective solution negotiations surrounding project issues/ challenges Communicates effectively and efficiently with internal teams
- Apply strategic and critical though process to deliverable designs to achieve the overall project objectives, and alignment of customer and company objectives
- Ensures team compliance with design request process and related procedures so as to not compromise project success
- Work closely with Design team to monitor project status and troubleshoot any project issues
Prototype Coordination:
- Provide inputs to Graphic Designers during their preparation of concept rendering and related presentation layouts, which address the client’s request, expectations, the specifications, and highlight design features.
- Prepare Bill of Materials to review with Prototype and Production teams
- Cuts materials by operating Sample making machine when Corrugated Displays’ Prototype Technician is not available or due dates are to be met.
- Assembles prototypes and to ensure that all parts lock in correctly, the structure is sound, and fit for use.
- Checks completeness and conformance of all parts to the Bill of Materials.
- Work with the Graphic Designers and Graphic Production Manager to ensure the accuracy of prototype and production dielines.
- Provide the Production department and external suppliers the accurate files and related information for production tooling dies.
- Provide instruction sheets to Sales and Production teams for prototype and production sample(s).
Quality Control:
- Adheres to company SOPs and policies and utilizes company tools and resources to operate a required on a daily basis
- Identifies and communicates in timely fashion, issues with estimated project times and/ or execution time overages that will impact deliverable deadlines and/ or compromise project deadlines
- Proactively monitor current and upcoming workload so as to invest the appropriate amount of time into deliverable and not compromise upcoming deliverables
- Proactively address and deliver solutions on project challenges in order to ensure On-Time In Full delivery and improve the effectiveness and efficiency
- Other duties as assigned
What You’ll Need to be Successful:
- 5+ years of experience in design and engineering of semi-permanent corrugate displays
- Postsecondary education in Packaging Design, Industrial Design, Engineering, Graphic Design, Graphic Communication Management, or equivalent experience
- Experience using ArtiosCAD specific to the retail design and POP industry
- Experience using AutoCAD and CIMEX is an asset
- Experience using a cutting table for corrugate and plastic (i.e. Kongsberg)
- Advanced experience using Adobe CC (Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat) asset
- Advanced knowledge of corrugate substrates and manufacturing processes
- Experience working with Graphic Designers with an expert understanding and knowledge of corrugate printing processes Ability to produce sketches (informal and formal)
- A strong team player, but also able to work independently
- Ability to manage and organize multiple competing priorities
- Strong attention to detail
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills
