General Definition of Work: Performs work in the installation, maintenance, modification, and repair of electrical systems in school buildings and facilities.
Qualifications Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
Essential Functions:
  • Performs intermediate skilled trades work installing, maintaining and repairing electrical, plumbing, hvac, carpentry and other fixtures and equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned.
  • Responds to the maintenance requirements of assigned schools/facilities in a geographic zone through work orders, preventative maintenance requirements, emergency calls, etc.
  • Communicates with dispatch, other craftsmen, supervisors, and administrative staff.
  • Communicates and coordinates work with other trades as necessary.
  • Collaborates with school personnel regarding job requests and outcomes.
  • Operates tools and equipment associated with the trade.
  • Maintains accurate work order records and parts inventory.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and organized work space.
  • Evaluate equipment and building systems.
  • Coordinate warranty repairs.
  • Perform related work as required.
Duties Assigned to Specific Job Functions:
  • Install, maintain, and repair electrical systems.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, assemble, install, connect, repair, adjust, and test a variety of electrical systems.
  • Repair electrical services and switch panels.
  • Install underground cables and overhead wiring.
  • Install and maintain lighting systems and fluorescent and general light fixtures.
  • Maintain and repair fire alarm systems.
  • Install and wire control devices on heating systems, boilers, fan coil units, and baseboard electric heat.
  • Replace and maintain electric motors.
  • Install conduit, wiring, switches, and receptacles.
  • Test, repair, and calibrate electrical equipment, meters, relays, etc.
  • Replace and repair switches and receptacles.
  • Troubleshoot complex electrical systems to include but not limited to theater lighting, stage rigging, etc.
  • Respond to emergency calls associated with related equipment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and safety precautions of a trade; knowledge of the use and characteristics of common building materials; ability to use and operate tools and machinery associate with trade; thorough knowledge of hazards and safe precautions associated with the trade; ability to plan, organize and successfully complete multiple, unrelated simultaneous projects; ability to provide and follow oral and written instructions; demonstrate leadership and organizational skills; ability to estimate material and time required for various jobs; ability to interpret technical documents, drawings, blueprints, etc.; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates. Proficient in the use of computers and job-related software. General knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in installing, repairing and maintaining HVAC, electrical and plumbing equipment; general knowledge of and skill in basic carpentry; general knowledge of the occupational and safety precautions of the work; ability to exercise independent judgment in determining operating conditions; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students and parents.
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma, GED, or completion of a vocational/apprenticeship program. Minimum six (6) years of experience in the trade.
Special Requirements:
Journeyman license strongly preferred; This position will require the ability to travel to and from schools and facilities inside and outside of the school division. Possession of appropriate license(s), certificate(s), and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board. Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the ability to operate motor vehicles.
Marginal Functions:
While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control motor vehicles and the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions. Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information. Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution.
Physical Requirements:
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; bend, stoop and reach overhead; work requires reporting to the worksite daily; Must have the ability to stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to operate tools and equipment; preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to the risk of electrical shock.
