Position Summary: Substation Technician- A is a non-exempt position in the construction, maintenance and repair of substation equipment / systems. Substation Technician- A has a 6-8 year continuous working knowledge of 525 kv and below substation equipment, apparatus, and wiring. This position requires work in confined spaces and in elevated work areas, and works with various pieces of construction equipment specific to the trade. A Substation Technician A may work independently or with others, occasionally work long hours during emergency conditions. This position should be able to lead/coach subordinates on the crew. This position works at various locations. The position may also be required to travel to another state depending on customer demands.nnEssential Functions:nnWorks safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair, testing, adjusting and troubleshooting work of substation equipment/systems which includes, but is not limited to, work involving the following:nnConcrete Foundations, ground grids, and steel erectionnnBuswork (High and Low Voltage)nnAirbreak / Hookstick SwitchesnnControl CablennTerminations (High / Low Voltage)nnControl BuildingsnnConduit and duck banksnnCapacitor bank installations 23kv- 230 kvnnTransformers, regulators and circuit breakersnnCircuit Switchers, motor-operated and manual switchesnnResponsible for maintaining Company vehicles, test equipment and tools in good working conditionsnnFrequently works with energized high voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect the lives of themselves and others.nnMinimum Responsibilities:nnAble to perform rigorous physical labor.nnMust be capable of climbing and working at heights up to 125 feet above ground.nnMust possess a Commercial Drivers’ License.nnMust supply own personal hand tools required by the company for this work.nnMust supply own safety toed work boots.nnMust be capable of lifting in excess of 50 lbs.nnMust be capable of working in confined spaces/areas.nnMust be able to work independently or with others.nnOperational experience of various types of heavy equipment :nnBucket, derrick and boom trucksnnBackhoes, excavators and skid steer loadersnnArticulating Man-liftsnnPressure DiggersnnTrenchersnnTrack Crawler Loader/BackhoennRough Terrain Telescopic ForkliftsnnWilling to work over-time or long hours during emergency conditions and/or when requested. Schedules can change frequently and with short notice.nn90% Travel RequirednnCapable of following Company safety rules and policies.nnMust have extensive knowledge of construction standard practices, techniques, quality requirements, applicable codes and standards.nnMust be capable of working in close proximity of energized substation equipment.nnMust interpret substation structural drawings (i.e. elevations, plan views, section views, grounding details, and foundation plans) and communicate with customers and subordinates.nnAbility to accurately appraise technical situations and recommend resolutions to problems.nnAbility to lead/coach subordinates on the crew.nnAbility to develop and interpret a material list.nnAbility to trace out phasing in a substation and verify to the three line diagrams.nnProficient knowledge in all aspects of substation systems.nnAbility to determine the proper phase shift and rotation in paralleling transformer banks.nnCapable of running the job during the absence of the ForemannnAbility to establish grade, elevations, and layout of foundations and cable trough in new and existing stations.nnPhysical Demands:nnThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.nnWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
