Your Opportunity The role of Instrumentation & Controls Engineer is to work on projects of all sizes as part of multidiscipline project teams. The successful candidate is expected to evaluate, select, specify, and engineer instrumentation and control systems or details for a project. The Automation Engineer will perform a variety of other tasks in their role which may include calculations, quality checking, training and leadership of more junior team members, contribution to proposals, and field work.
Your Key Responsibilities - Engineering support for projects of all sizes and complexity.
- Member of technical team developing instrumentation and controls deliverables including shutdown keys, control narratives, control system architecture; control panel design; instrument datasheets; instrument index; and calculations.
- P&ID development and input.
- Project Leadership role on projects within capability and experience level, from small through mid-sized and or large projects.
- Provide development and guidance to engineers, EITS, and technologists within the discipline team.
- Evaluated, selects, specifies, and engineers the installation and integration all I&C systems or components for a project.
- Engages in the development of designs through verbal and written communication as well as sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats.
- Familiar with technologies in development of three-dimensional models of instrumentation systems and provides markups for designers.
- Leads project coordination meetings with internal team members and or external consultants, owners and contractors, sub-contractors, and vendors.
- Participates in client project requirement meetings, value analysis and cost estimating.
- Performs and oversees the performance of calculations using company standard software and proprietary manufacturer software.
- Leads or works on multiple projects as required.
- Participate in various project review sessions including value-engineering, constructability, and risk reviews.
- Conducts quality assurance and quality control on own projects.
- Assists in the development of new standards, templates, and specifications for the I&C team.
- Participation in HAZOP and various other process hazard assessment, evaluation, and design sessions.
- Field instrumentation commodity specifications and material requisition development.
- Control system equipment specifications and material requisition development.
- Controls configuration specification & scoping for internal or 3rd party programmers.
- Coordination with other disciplines to execute deliverables, project schedule and budget.
- Preparation of construction work packages.
- Project team communication.
- May assist pursuit or project teams with developing and managing estimated project scope, budget, staffing, and schedule.
- May lead the preparation and coordination of the project specifications with construction documents.
Qualifications Your Capabilities and Credentials - Ontario and Quebec Licensed Professional Engineer or Professional Licensee in the field of I&C.
- Knowledge and application of National Electrical Code and applicable Energy Industry codes and standards.
- General understanding of all phases of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
- Strong knowledge of instrumentation and control systems, means and methods, materials, and industry standards.
- Ability to check the work of others for accuracy and completeness and manage time to meet project budget and schedule.
- Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
- Thorough understanding of engineering concepts and ability to effectively communicate ideas to others.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, as well as technical presentation skills, including strong capability with Microsoft 365 Suite.
- Bilingual in English and French will be a strong asset.
- Time management skills and experience working and leading teams on a schedule driven projects.
- Control system (DCS, PLC, & SCADA) panel design & specification experience.
- Experience in various heavy industrial sections including Oil & Gas, Mining, Power Generation, etc. to be demonstrated and verifiable through references.
Education and Experience - Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Engineering. The ideal candidate candidate is a Licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario and Quebec. If not licensed in both provinces, the candidate is qualified to be licensed in both jurisdictions and understands that is an expectation of the role and commits to attaining license in both provinces.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience with a focus on I&C scope on engineering projects.
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
