Job Description

Reports to the Coordinator/Director. Performs computerized tomography (CT) scans and procedures that require independent judgment and a high degree of precision and skill in the application of high technology computerized CT equipment. Follows protocols and procedures as directed by the radiologist and/or supervising technologist.MISSION, VALUES and SERVICE GOALS

Performs computerized tomography (CT) scans of all parts of the body according to prescribed protocols, policies and procedures by:
  • Obtaining pertinent clinical history necessary for the radiologist to interpret the CT scans. Communicating with referring physicians and other health care personnel, calling reports as needed.
  • Explaining CT procedure to patient and family as needed.
  • Practicing sterile and isolation techniques to prevent contamination.
  • Performing IV injection for contrast media administration; obtaining appropriate allergy history, assessing patient condition and reporting to the radiology nurse or radiologist as needed; performing CPR and other supportive emergency procedures.
  • Assisting the physician with biopsies and drainage procedures.
  • Preparing final paperwork and scan into the PACs system.
  • Operating computed radiology devices and sending images to Nighthawk.
  • Properly tracking examinations using the Radiology information system.
  • Performing CT computer boot up and shut-down functions, reporting malfunctions of equipment to Radiology Services Engineer or calling for service, and maintaining equipment accessories in a clean and orderly manner.
Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:
  • Completing other job-related duties and projects as assigned.

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience
  • The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through graduation from an approved school of radiology technology with registry by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (AART), certification by the Indiana State Board of Health and three months of on-the-job training.

Knowledge & Skills
  • Requires the knowledge of radiation emitting units.
  • Demonstrates skills to position patients properly for all examinations.
  • Demonstrates well-developed communication skills to understand written and verbal instructions.
  • Exhibits an interest in scientific, technical and computer knowledge to master the principal protocols in obtaining CT images with minimal exposure to the patient.
  • Requires the computer skills necessary to maintain accurate patient treatment records.
Working Conditions
  • Works in a hospital environment with hazards due to radiation.
  • Wears lead protective aprons and gloves during surgical procedures; must wear film badge and maintain strictly controlled standards.
Physical Demands
  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
