Job Description

A General Driver is responsible for operating a vehicle to transport goods, materials, or passengers safely and efficiently. This role may involve driving for a variety of industries, including logistics, retail, healthcare, or construction, depending on the company's needs. General Drivers are expected to follow all traffic laws, adhere to safety regulations, maintain the vehicle in good condition, and ensure timely delivery or transportation services. This position may require local, regional, or long-distance driving, and drivers must possess strong organizational and communication skills to manage their duties effectively.nnKey Responsibilities:nnVehicle Operation: Safely operate vehicles (e.g., trucks, vans, cars) for the transport of goods, materials, or passengers to and from specified locations.nnRoute Planning: Plan and follow the most efficient routes, ensuring timely delivery or transportation while considering factors such as traffic, weather, and road conditions.nnLoading and Unloading: Depending on the type of vehicle and cargo, assist with loading and unloading items, ensuring that goods are properly secured to avoid damage.nnVehicle Maintenance: Perform basic vehicle inspections, including checking fluid levels, tire pressure, brakes, lights, and other critical components. Report any mechanical issues or required maintenance to management.nnRecord Keeping: Maintain accurate records of deliveries, routes, mileage, fuel consumption, and any incidents (e.g., delays or accidents). Ensure all documentation is complete and submitted on time.nnCustomer Service: Interact with clients, vendors, or passengers in a professional and courteous manner. Ensure that deliveries or transport services meet customer expectations and address any issues or concerns promptly.nnSafety Compliance: Adhere to all traffic laws, safety regulations, and company policies, including wearing seat belts, using appropriate protective gear (if applicable), and operating vehicles safely. Ensure compliance with industry-specific regulations (e.g., weight limits, hazardous material handling, etc.).nnDelivery/Transportation Timeliness: Ensure that deliveries or transportation services are completed within the scheduled timeframe, making adjustments as necessary based on real-time factors like traffic or road closures.nnCommunication: Maintain regular communication with dispatchers, supervisors, or managers regarding progress, delays, or any challenges encountered during the route. Report any issues or accidents immediately.nnInventory Management: Depending on the role, drivers may assist with checking inventory for accuracy, ensuring that deliveries match the order, and reporting discrepancies.nnFuel Management: Monitor fuel levels and ensure that vehicles are refueled as necessary. Maintain receipts and records for fuel purchases as required by the company.nnSkills and Qualifications:nnValid Driver's License: Must hold a valid driver's license appropriate for the vehicle being operated (e.g., Class C, Class B, or Class A CDL, depending on the company and vehicle type).nnClean Driving Record: A safe driving record, with no history of accidents or traffic violations, is typically required.nnKnowledge of Local/Regional Roads: Familiarity with local or regional roadways, traffic patterns, and effective routes is essential for timely deliveries or transportation.nnPhysical Stamina: Ability to perform physical tasks such as loading, unloading, and securing cargo, as well as the ability to sit for long periods while driving.nnBasic Mechanical Knowledge: Understanding of basic vehicle maintenance and the ability to identify and address minor vehicle issues (e.g., checking oil, tire pressure).nnTime Management: Ability to manage time effectively to ensure timely arrivals, deliveries, or transportation services w hile adhering to schedules and routes.nnCustomer Service: Strong interpersonal skills, including the bility to interact professionally and courteously with customers, clients, and colleagues.nnAttention to Detail: Ability to follow detailed instructions, check routes and delivery orders for accuracy, and ensure that all paperwork and documentation is completed accurately.nnProblem-Solving: Ability to adapt to unexpected situations such as traffic delays, route changes, or vehicle issues and find solutions to keep on schedule.nnEducation and Experience:nnEducation: High school diploma or equivalent. Additional certifications (e.g., CDL, forklift operation, or hazardous materials handling) may be required for certain roles.nnExperience: Previous driving experience in a similar role is preferred but not always required. Experience in customer service, logistics, or transport is an advantage.nnCertifications (if applicable):nnCommercial Driver's License (CDL), if required for operating larger vehicles (e.g., trucks or buses).nnForklift Certification, if required for handling cargo in warehouses or on loading docks.nnHazardous Materials Certification, if transporting hazardous materials.nnWorking Conditions:nnEnvironment: The job primarily involves working outdoors, driving for extended hours, and interacting with customers or clients.
