As the Wine Director & Assistant Restaurant Manager, you will be responsible for curating and managing the wine program, overseeing inventory, and leading wine-related education and training. Additionally, you will assist in the day-to-day management of the restaurant, ensuring smooth operations, managing staff, and upholding the service standards that have made Flagstaff House a landmark in the Boulder community.
Key Responsibilities:
- Wine Program Leadership: Curate and manage a diverse and high-quality wine list that complements our seasonal menu. Maintain a balanced inventory of wine and other beverages, ensuring appropriate stock levels at all times. Adhering to our Wine Spectator Grand Award Expectations.
- Staff Training & Education: Educate and train restaurant staff on wine pairings, tasting notes, and service techniques. Foster a culture of wine appreciation within the team.
- Guest Experience: Create memorable experiences by guiding guests through the wine selection process, providing personalized recommendations, and ensuring excellent wine service.
- Wine Purchasing & Budgeting: Develop and manage the wine budget, negotiate with distributors, and make strategic purchasing decisions to support both sales goals and budget constraints.
- Restaurant Management: Assist in the management of day-to-day operations of the restaurant, ensuring exceptional service, proper staffing, and adherence to company standards.
- Team Leadership: Support and mentor front-of-house staff, foster a collaborative and positive work environment, and ensure proper staffing levels during shifts.
- Operational Excellence: Oversee opening and closing duties, ensure cleanliness and organization of dining and wine areas, and ensure compliance with all health, safety, and company policies.
- Guest Relations: Handle guest concerns with professionalism and tact, ensuring that every guest enjoys an unforgettable dining experience.
Key Qualifications:
- Extensive Wine Knowledge: Deep knowledge of global wine regions, varietals, wine production, and food pairings. Certified Sommelier or WSET certification required.
- Leadership & Management Experience: 3+ years of experience as a Wine Director or Assistant Manager in a fine dining or upscale restaurant setting.
- Exceptional Communication Skills: Ability to effectively communicate wine knowledge to both guests and staff.
- Hospitality Focus: A genuine passion for providing outstanding guest service and leading by example to inspire your team.
- Strong Organizational Skills: Proficient in inventory management, ordering, budgeting, and wine cost control.
- Attention to Detail: Ability to maintain a high level of organization in all aspects of wine service, inventory, and restaurant operations.
- Team-Oriented: Collaborative, proactive, and skilled at working with all departments to maintain an efficient, welcoming, and high-functioning team.
- Problem Solving: Ability to handle high-pressure situations with poise and professionalism, finding solutions that benefit both guests and the business.
- Flexibility & Adaptability: Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, and adapt to changing priorities and demands within a busy restaurant environment.
