Summary:
As a Safety Manager in our Heavy Civil Construction company, you will be responsible for planning, implementing, and supervising project safety, accident, and fire protection programs to ensure compliance with industry and corporate safety standards on all job sites.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Recognize and control hazardous working conditions and unsafe activities involving employees and subcontractors through proactive safety management and clear communication with supervisory personnel.
- Conduct thorough inspections, air sampling tests, property damage assessments, and personal injury investigations. Issue confined space entry and "hot work" permits as needed.
- Document accidents, safety violations, and unsafe conditions/activities, performing root cause analysis and recommending corrective actions.
- Oversee safety practices for mobile batch plants, including energy control protocols (e.g., lockout/tagout procedures).
- Conduct safety inspections and hazard assessments specifically for mobile batch plant operations.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations related to the operation, maintenance, and movement of mobile batch plants.
- Perform hazard assessments for project activities, advising on corrective actions and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to minimize risks.
- Ensure all required safety records and reports are complete, accurate, and submitted promptly. Address deficiencies and take corrective actions where necessary.
- Partner with external safety, health, and insurance personnel during inspections and audits.
- Assist in creating and delivering employee safety orientation and training programs.
- Conduct classroom and field safety training for project personnel, which may involve climbing heights on equipment and platforms.
- Work in extreme environments, traverse rough terrain, and document site conditions with photographs.
Qualifications:
- At least 5-10 years experience in safety management in construction with at least 3 years in water reservoir and mobile batch plant projects.
- Advanced knowledge of OSHA standards, trench safety, confined space entry, and fall protection systems.
- Expertise in hazard recognition, root cause analysis, and corrective action planning.
- Proven ability to implement and enforce safety standards on large-scale, multi-site heavy civil projects.
- Familiarity with ACI (American Concrete Institute) standards for reservoir concrete work.
- Understanding of mobile batch plant configurations, including safety risks tied to aggregate storage, conveyor systems, and mixing drum operations.
- Competency in managing heavy equipment operations, including cranes, loaders, and concrete pumps.
Skills:
- Exceptional risk assessment and mitigation planning skills for heavy construction sites.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to train and mentor diverse teams.
- Competency in safety management software (e.g., Procore, HCSS Safety) and reporting tools.
Education and Credentials:
- Bachelor’s Degree in safety related field
- 5 years of safety experience in construction industry and
- ASP or GSP certification and CHST certification
OR if No Degree
- 10 years of safety experience in construction industry and
- OSHA 500 and CHST certification
Compensation:
- Salary will be based on a combination of previous related experience, education, and credentials.

Safety Considerations:
- May work 12 hours per day, 6-7 days per week in extreme hot and cold environments after acclimatization.
- Required to wear all necessary personal protective equipment daily.
- May be exposed to snakes, insects, and similar hazards with appropriate PPE provided to minimize exposure.
- Expected to work on variable terrain, operate a motor vehicle, and lift/carry up to 50 pounds unassisted.
- May use field test equipment requiring manual dexterity and hand/eye coordination.
- May be required to enter confined and/or enclosed spaces with respiratory protective equipment.
- Occasional climbing may be necessary.
- May be required to drive for long distances and work at night.
- Exposure to hazardous materials on a routine basis with appropriate PPE and protective clothing provided.
