Patient Types:
Neuro: Craniectomies, strokes, TIAs, seizures, dizziness, syncope, dementia
Spine: anterior, posterior, lateral fusions, discectomy
General medical overflow: wounds, chest pain, COVID, sepsis, Client, COPD, CHF, GIB, cellulitis
Patient Ratios:
RN:
Day - Up to 5, but ideally 3-4
Night - 1:6-8
Tech:
Day - 1:4-5
Night - 1:6-8
Required Certifications:
BLS, NIHSS
Skills required
Basic MS skills, wound care, wound vacs, neuro checks, trach management (T-mist mask), incision care, drain/tube management, BiPap, HFNC, post-surgical recovery (esp. spinal)
Preferred: chest tubes, lumbar drains, IV skills, cardiac rhythm interpretation
Will have to sign name to confirm rhythm strip, if the traveler does not know tele, CRN will do it
No ventilators
Support on the Unit:
Charge nurse: Full patient assignment
Unit secretary, 24/7
Hospitalist, 24/7
RT, 24/7
Centralized telemetry monitoring, with tele tech
Phlebotomy to assist with peripheral blood draws
Charting System/Equipment:
EPIC (preferred)

Pyxis
Client monitors
Floating:
MSU

MS Overflow
ED Holding (MST patients waiting for a bed) - 1:4 ratio
Travelers will float first
Orientation
1 shift of training on the unit
1st day: NEO (4h) meet with Generalist Emily Williams
Remainder of the shift (8h) will be training on the unit with a preceptor
Scheduling:
Weekend rotation: Every other
6-week schedule; will receive 1-2 week prior
No self-scheduling
Shift time:
Day: 0700-1930
PM: 11:00-2330
Night: 1900-0730
RTO: Able to approve up to 7 days, additional days email Patient Care Manager Amanda Lennart
No On Call
Holiday Expectations: 1
AAH adheres to a "fatigue policy" where all staff, including travelers, cannot work more than 60 hours in a week or 5 consecutive 12 hour shifts
Other notes:
Scrub Color: Any color (no camo, denim, hoodies)
Must document pain level, before and after (1 hour for oral) giving pain medications - The pain score must also meet the pain score with nth medication order-i.e. if a patient has a score of 8, the RN cannot give the Tylenol that is ordered for mild 1-3. The RN must call for an order if the patient wants Tylenol for the score of 8.
Parking: Free
24/7 security if needed to be walked to and from parking lots
Shuttle services for the winter
Day shift:
1 block from the hospital
Night shift:
At hospital parking lots
