Construction Engineer (Inspector)
Chicagoland Area – Fully Onsite
$60–120K (Depending on Experience) – Full Time with Benefits

Chin) is seeking a dedicated Construction Engineer (Inspector) to join our Transportation group in the Chicago-land area. The ideal candidate will have previous roadway construction inspection experience, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work independently and efficiently on their own. The Construction Engineer (Inspector) is responsible for field inspection and documentation of the contractor’s work activities on the project.
Job Duties :
- Inspect and document contractor’s work activities.
- Perform field inspections to ensure work completed follows the contract documents including plans and specifications.
- Interpret plans, specifications, and special provisions for construction projects.
- Submit an accurate, detailed, daily report of all events that occur at the job site including contractor's staffing level, construction status, pay quantities, material requirements, and more.
- Verifies that specified quality control tests are performed as needed, inspection test records are submitted in a timely manner, and corrective actions implemented, if necessary, by the contractor.
- Prepares time and material changed work documentation and calculations.
- Complete daily, weekly, and monthly reporting following the agencies or municipality’s documentation processes (including quantity calculations for payment, field book entry, etc.)
- Layout or verify construction layout according to the contract drawings and documents.
- Assist the project-specific Client Supervisor or other members of the project team with various engineering tasks as needed.
- Must be able to read and understand construction contract documents and be familiar with interpreting plans, specifications, and shop drawings.
- Performs tasks related to all field inspection and engineering activities on a construction project or multiple concurrent construction sites and involves a combination of office and work site visits.
- Implements and utilizes an established file system and procedures setup for each project.
- Prepares and submits daily progress reports originated by oneself for the construction activities inspected.
- Ensures that field work incorporates latest contractor submittals and is documented on as-built set of drawings.
- Checks and confirms that project payment item quantities are calculated correctly.
- Inspects, observes, documents, and verifies work in progress by the construction contractor to ensure compliance with project schedule, contract documents, and plans.
- Advises Contractor superintendent of necessary actions to ensure conformance with plan, specs, and contract. Reviews and resolves quantity disputes with contractor.
- Utilizes engineering inspection practices to perform sophisticated and complicated mathematical calculations, constructability and biddability reviews, and measurements of completed work to date.
- Measure and verify contractor’s quantities in accordance with contract documents, which shall be reflected in the Inspectors Daily Report (IDR.)
- The IDR shall be completed daily and include each pay item with the contractor’s daily activities and documentation of quality issues that may result in Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) or Quality Deficiency Reports (QDRs.)
- Actively take progress photos and photos of any problem/deficiencies for documentation.
- Track construction activities to complete work reports for field orders or any work to be paid for as Time and Material (T&M.)
- Perform and document traffic and erosion control reports.
Qualifications :
- Experience working on construction projects as field inspector (at least 2 years) or recent graduate with either an engineering or construction management degree.
- Certified in IDOT Documentation of Contracts Quantities, or able to obtain within 60 days of employment.
- Proficiency in basic computer programs such as Microsoft Office, e-Builder, and CMMS.
- EIT certification is a plus and should be working towards PE licensure.
- IDOT, Tollway, and/or CDOT experience a plus.
